Sitting on the tailgate of my truck, I fire up the new Optimus Gemini II dual-burner camp stove in order to make some coffee and oatmeal to start the day. With a scenic backdrop of snowcapped mountains piercing a pale blue sky, I twist the knobs on the slim silver stove to get the heat settings just right. Moments later, I’ve got oatmeal simmering in one pot while my coffee water boils in a mug next to it. The new Optimus stove, which fits perfectly into my truck-camping regimen, is considered compact. The stove has two burners, making it a…
Toronto sure looks like a rough place these days. Not even by Canadian standards, but ours. Even the U.S. Consulate isn’t safe, as we found out last month.Yeah, that gun control is going just swimmingly, isn’t it? However, I apparently need to give the Toronto cops their due. They made two arrests in the incident, which is good. It’s everything else they announced about the arrests that has me scratching my head.Toronto police announced the arrests Thursday of a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy in the second shooting at the U.S. Consulate in five…
After a long day in the sun paddling the Missouri River, I hopped off the canoe, walked along the sandbar, and began to set up my tent. As I unfolded the poles, I began to hear the clinking and clanking of knives chopping vegetables and metal spoons hitting the side of a mixing bowl. Soon, the crackle and smoke of fire began to spread over the campsite, and I got my first inkling that something tasty for dinner was on the way. I walked over to the fire with my camp chair in hand, and took a seat to watch…
Violent crime is down across the country, and that’s a very good thing. Our homicide rate hitting record lows is something that we should all be celebrating, and we’re on pace to see it even lower this year. Again, a very good thing. However, the only acceptable number of homicides is zero, and that means there’s always work to be done. We need to be realistic, though, which is why gun control is still a non-starter.But maybe the answer is to not let dangerous people walk around on our city streets? I’m just putting that…
Within the Air Force, officer ranks follow a clear-cut structure, divided into three categories: company grade, field grade, and general officers. Company grade officers range from O-1 to O-3. Climbing the ranks, next are field grade officers, in the O-4 to O-6 range, taking the helm of mid-level command. Finally, at the top of the hierarchy are general officers, O-7 and above, who oversee strategy. Air Force Company Grade Officer Ranks Second Lieutenant (O-1) The rank of second lieutenant is shown through a single gold bar. Proper forms of address include “second lieutenant” or “lieutenant.” Commissioned airmen sometimes may skip…
I got my first Swiss Army knife at a flea market when I was about 11 years old. I have no clue which model it was, but it had the basic tools we typically see nestled between those familiar red handle scales, such as a knife blade, can opener, bottle opener, and corkscrew. I beat the hell out of that knife for a few years. It whittled hundreds of sticks into sharp points. I used it to open cans of Dinty Moore or Chef Boyardee I’d brought to the campfire. It trimmed rope we used in countless forts in the…
Iowa’s always been pretty decent when it comes to gun laws, but the state has made a couple of major improvements over the past few years. In 2021, the state’s permitless carry law kicked in, and the following year voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that declares firearm ownership a fundamental individual right and mandating that courts apply “strict scrutiny” to any future gun control legislation. Those advances could be in danger, though, unless Iowa gun owners turn out in force this November. While Democrat candidates like Christina Bohannan and Josh Turek don’t…
All of us at CarBuzz love the manual transmission, and odds are that if you’re reading this, you probably do, too. Why? It’s just fun! We like being more involved in operating the car and having an extra level of control over the driving experience. Plus, when we do really nail a rev-matched downshift, we feel especially satisfied. Apparently, though, driving stick isn’t just fun, it can even be good for you, and that’s coming from a famous doctor and professor in Japan. The budding Switchback trade show held its second annual standalone event in New Orleans last week, and while it’s a far cry from the heyday of Outdoor Retailer — around 200 brands versus more than 1,000 — the gear on display was cutting-edge. Overall, the show was a concentrated convergence of top brands previewing 2027 gear — from running and hiking, to camping, biking, climbing, and even some noteworthy lifestyle products. In addition to next year’s launches, there were some in-line products from brands I hadn’t seen before. Here’s a rundown of the very best on display at the Switchback Spring product…
Lake County in Illinois isn’t quite Chicago. Its seat is Waukegan, which isn’t nearly as large and not nearly as violent as the Windy City is. Still, it’s Illinois, it’s urban enough to follow similar politics to its big sister city, and so it’s no surprise that many there like guns. And it’s unsurprising that, like most of the country, the county is seeing a drop in violence. This is a good thing, and no one should pretend otherwise. What’s a problem, though, is that lawmakers there, like in so many other places, are drawing the…
GM, Ford, and Ram aren’t the only truck-builders who are rolling out America 250 special edition pickups to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary. Nissan has just announced its own Frontier 250th Anniversary Edition, but if you think that a US-centric truck with a Japanese brand on the side is a problem, just wait until you see what Nissan has delivered. A Frontier For The New Frontier Credit: Nissan Nissan’s Frontier pickup has at least as much of a claim to being American as the Ford Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado, and Ram 1500 pickups that are also getting special commemorative editions this…
From opening day of the double-black terrain to slushy spring park laps, I have different snowboard setups for specific conditions and styles. But recently, no matter what board I grab from my quiver, my ThirtyTwo TM-2 Double BOA snowboard boots are a dependable choice, day in and day out, when I’m heading to the iconic terrain of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. The TM-2 Double Boa is a versatile choice thanks to its medium-stiff flex, and it’s perfect for chasing lines and objectives across a range of conditions. This boot design is a solid match for big mountain double-black runs, carving…
DOJ Civil Rights Division chief Harmeet K. Dhillon and the Division’s Second Amendment Section have officially filed suit against the commonwealth of Virginia over its ban on AR-15s and other commonly-owned firearms and magazines that takes effect today. Researchers at Binghamton University used AI technology to discover a new way to detect plastic landmines in vast war zones—and it doesn’t even require an internet connection. The research, Deep Learning and Multiview-Based Detection of Scatterable PFM-1 Landmines: Performance, Out-of-Sample Evaluation, and Field Readiness, recently appeared in the journal Geomatics and examined the prevalence of small landmines encased in plastic to deter metal detectors and other geophysical techniques like asground-penetrating radar, magnetometry and electromagnetic induction in combat zones—all found by the study’s authors to be significantly less effective with plastic mines than with metal ones. The study was authored by…
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has warned that artificial intelligence-powered digital nuclear weapons could increase rivalries between already warring nations. CIA Director John Ratcliffe said that “AI tools will only continue to raise the stakes in our competition with all of America’s adversaries.” The United States’ Hypocrisy On Nuclear Weapons It would be “not misplaced to refer to their capabilities as akin to digital nuclear weapons,” he added, citing discussions within the administration of United States President Donald Trump. Ratcliffe further claimed that rival nations “work to steal and to manipulate America’s advancements for their own ends and gains.” Promises of…
Uncontrolled wildfires continued to spread through Colorado and Utah this week, prompting evacuations and requests for residents to avoid fireworks. Several major wildfires continue to spread across the two states, with total acreage burned now exceeding 100,000. Hundreds of firefighters have been deployed to the areas to contain the rapidly expanding blazes. But local authorities have urged many to evacuate public lands under threat from the fires, especially campers and others enjoying them near the fires. In both states, officials have asked many residents to avoid using fireworks — even as the country prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary this…
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey is rolling out sweeping security measures for the upcoming NATO summit, deploying tens of thousands of police and placing air defenses on high alert, while banning public gatherings and imposing controversial restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly. That’s meant to safeguard the summit, but also to display strength and underscore Turkey’s commitment to the military alliance, even as it is often portrayed as an outlier within it. On July 7–8, leaders from all 32 member states are expected convene in the Turkish capital, including U.S. President Donald Trump, whose threats to withdraw from NATO…
This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog: The Earthquakes Just Won’t Stop: The New Madrid Fault And The Cascadia Subduction Zone Both Get Shaken As The Warnings Continue How much shaking is it going to take before most of the population starts paying attention? The ground underneath our feet just keeps shaking. Nobody can deny this. As you will see below, there has been a long list of large earthquakes that have hit our planet over the past week, and this is something that I have been writing about a lot in recent days. What we…
A year after its passage, Rhode Island’s prohibition on the sale, manufacture and transfer of so-called assault weapons takes effect today, as does an almost identical law in Virginia. Unlike Virginia, though, Rhode Island’s law is not subject to any kind of injunction barring enforcement, at least not yet. So, just like in the Old Dominion, gun stores were swamped with customers in the days before the ban took effect. At Surplus Provisions & Firearms in Warwick, customers lined up Tuesday to pick up firearms before the midnight deadline.”We have people that had started to line…
