Independence Day sales are typically known for deals on grills, lawn equipment, coolers, and ways to stay cool through the summer, and all of those can relate to prepping and survival in some way. After checking out a slew of sales, we’ve rounded up the best gear for preppers to check out to augment their survival kits and preparedness plans.July 4th lands on a Saturday this year, but sales have already started and run through the weekend for the most part. Like most roundups, we’ll keep updating as sales come and go throughout the period, so check back periodically to…
Hurricanes pose a large threat to those who live near the coast. Between the high wind and massive amounts of rain, they can cause various types of damage that can exceed $150 billion each year.I’ve lived through several hurricanes of all categories and dealt with flooding, wind damage, power outages, and more. In North Carolina, we don’t have it quite as bad as Florida, but less prepared communities can have even tougher times with large storms. Many people around the world and in the US aren’t affected by hurricanes, so this list isn’t for everyone. BAGHDAD (AP) — The U.S. military is on track to pull all of its forces out of Iraq by the end of September, officials said Wednesday, marking the end of a presence that started with the 2003 invasion against Saddam Hussein. Washington and Baghdad agreed in 2024 to wind down the much smaller U.S.-led operations against the Islamic State group. U.S. troops pulled out of bases in most areas of Iraq last year but maintained a presence in the semi-autonomous northern Kurdish region. Bases there have regularly come under attack since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Iran…
The Army is experimenting with an unusual way to shore up a vulnerable piece of the U.S. munitions supply chain: growing one of the raw materials for gunpowder in a laboratory. Researchers at the Army’s DEVCOM Armaments Center are testing cellulose produced by specially engineered bacteria as a possible source for nitrocellulose, a key ingredient in gunpowder and some rocket propellants, the service announced Monday. The military traditionally gets the cellulose used to make nitrocellulose from wood and cotton. Army researchers say those sources come with problems, including unstable supply chains, slow plant growth and variations in the quality of…

Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao is listed as the defendant as part of a lawsuit Krepp filed in July 2025. Krepp claims she was retaliated against not just for reporting a hostile workplace, but for her past roles and being an…

Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev went to Iceland in October 1986 expecting two days of talks. By the end of the weekend, the leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union were discussing something almost unthinkable at the height of the Cold War: getting rid of their nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, for the world, the deal fell apart. That historical weekend is the subject of The Brink of War, a new political drama opening in theaters Aug. 14. Jeff Daniels plays Reagan opposite Jared Harris as Gorbachev, with J.K. Simmons as Secretary of State George Shultz and Hope Davis as…
