The Marine Corps is fielding tracked robots that crawl the seabed, transit the surf zone, and hunt mines and unexploded ordnance on the beach itself. The Bayonet Autonomous Underwater Ground Vehicles give explosive ordnance disposal teams a way to survey and clear the most dangerous stretch of the approach without first putting Marines in the water. Recent awards to Greensea IQ cover Bayonet 250 systems under the Littoral Explosive Ordnance Neutralization, or LEON, family of systems. The contract forms part of the service’s effort to place unmanned platforms into high-risk roles that once required divers or dismounted teams. Bayonet 250…

Hurricanes pose a large threat to those who live near the coast. Between the high wind and massive amounts of rain, they can cause various types of damage that can exceed $150 billion each year.I’ve lived through several hurricanes of all categories and dealt with flooding, wind damage, power outages, and more. In North Carolina, we don’t have it quite as bad as Florida, but less prepared communities can have even tougher times with large storms. Many people around the world and in the US aren’t affected by hurricanes, so this list isn’t for everyone. But, if you live on the…

QUSRA, West Bank (AP) — For five nights, Israeli settlers surrounded three Palestinian homes on the outskirts of a town in the occupied West Bank, preventing the families from leaving safely as their food and water supplies dwindled. Qusai Abu Rida was holed up inside with his teenage son when settlers cut the water and electricity, leaving them to drink well water as dozens of Israeli settlers erected tents outside. His Palestinian American brother in Ohio, who owns the house, watched the siege unfold on security cameras and called for updates. The standoff in the northern West Bank town of…

Pet owners are also shifting their feeding patterns away from kibble. The Farmer’s Dog helped pioneer this pivot, launching as a delivery-based subscription service in 2015 and expanding access to fresh pet nutrition across the U.S.  The brand quickly gained a devoted following thanks to its personalized portions, as well as its reliance on real, human-grade, whole ingredients, gently cooked at a lower temperature to better retain nutrients. Though the Department of Justice declined to ask a federal judge to extend the stay on his decision that the NFA’s registration scheme is unlawful when it comes to now-untaxed items, allowing his injunction to take effect as of today, the department still has nearly two months to decide whether or not to appeal that decision to the Fifth Circuit.  Not asking for the stay to remain in place is a very good sign, but a statement that DOJ does not plan to appeal would be even better. Unfortunately, when given the option to do…

A military base has responded after photos on social media claimed to show poor shower conditions at one of their sites. Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), a military based in Texas, told Military.com it was “addressing the state of the showers” in Camp Bullis after an image posted on Reddit showed the shower with stained floors and yellowing water. Bullis is a training site long used by the base, preceding World War I. “Camp Bullis is an aging training facility in which several military units transient for various exercises and operations,” a JBSA spokesperson told Military.com on Thursday. “The units…

There was a time in my running journey when I almost exclusively wore Merrell shoes both on the trail and on the road, but the barefoot kind with minimal cushioning and a tight, narrow fit. Then I moved to shoes with more cushioning, a wider toe box, and a minimal drop. So when I had the chance to test the MTL SpeedArc Peaks, I was curious about the mid-level cushion, thick lugs, and, most notably, the split carbon plate. These years-in-the-making shoes come out of the Merrell Test Lab, where numerous athletes help literally shape the shoe. The SpeedArcs were…

One thing that’s always a little awkward, at least for me, when carrying a firearm is using the bathroom. The gun weighs down my pants, and if I’m just taking a leak, I don’t want to completely drop trow. When I get home, before I start to change clothes, I’m eager to get the gun off first because of that weight and how it just makes changing clothes a bit more of a task. Maybe that’s just me, though. I may have never wrapped my brain around the best practices to avoid all of that.I…

The federal government’s ban on carrying firearms in U.S. post offices may soon be over, now that the Dept. of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel has issued an advisory opinion stating the ban does not comply with federal law.  Last month the DOJ also voluntarily withdrew its appeal of a district court decision that held the ban unconstitutional, keeping in place an injunction barring enforcement of the carry ban for those plaintiffs who want to carry “inside an ordinary United States Post Office or the surrounding Post Office property.” The plaintiffs in that case include…

The Army is opening some of its most advanced test ranges to private companies, giving these organizations the opportunity to battle-test their most advanced technology before going into the prototype phase. Suppressors are century-old technology, more or less. Sure, those today are generally better than Hiram Maxim’s first successful silencer, but the idea behind them has been around for a long time now.  While suppressors are more easily available today than at any other point since 1934, the export of them is a different matter entirely. It seems the Trump administration has moved the regulation of these devices from the State Department over to the Commerce Department. You still need approval to export them, but it’s not quite the same ordeal. And Everytown’s so-called publication, The Smoking…
