Sitting on the tailgate of my truck, I fire up the new Optimus Gemini II dual-burner camp stove in order to make some coffee and oatmeal to start the day. With a scenic backdrop of snowcapped mountains piercing a pale blue sky, I twist the knobs on the slim silver stove to get the heat settings just right. Moments later, I’ve got oatmeal simmering in one pot while my coffee water boils in a mug next to it. The new Optimus stove, which fits perfectly into my truck-camping regimen, is considered compact. The stove has two burners, making it a…
Toronto sure looks like a rough place these days. Not even by Canadian standards, but ours. Even the U.S. Consulate isn’t safe, as we found out last month.Yeah, that gun control is going just swimmingly, isn’t it? However, I apparently need to give the Toronto cops their due. They made two arrests in the incident, which is good. It’s everything else they announced about the arrests that has me scratching my head.Toronto police announced the arrests Thursday of a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy in the second shooting at the U.S. Consulate in five…
After a long day in the sun paddling the Missouri River, I hopped off the canoe, walked along the sandbar, and began to set up my tent. As I unfolded the poles, I began to hear the clinking and clanking of knives chopping vegetables and metal spoons hitting the side of a mixing bowl. Soon, the crackle and smoke of fire began to spread over the campsite, and I got my first inkling that something tasty for dinner was on the way. I walked over to the fire with my camp chair in hand, and took a seat to watch…
Violent crime is down across the country, and that’s a very good thing. Our homicide rate hitting record lows is something that we should all be celebrating, and we’re on pace to see it even lower this year. Again, a very good thing. However, the only acceptable number of homicides is zero, and that means there’s always work to be done. We need to be realistic, though, which is why gun control is still a non-starter.But maybe the answer is to not let dangerous people walk around on our city streets? I’m just putting that…
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point has dropped its fight against a court-imposed ban on its policy of limiting what professors can publicly say and write. Tim Bakken, the school’s longest-serving law professor, brought the original suit, claiming the academy’s policy violates his constitutional right to freedom of speech. He challenged West Point’s policy implemented in early 2025 that barred faculty members from publishing papers, speaking at conferences, or even appearing on a podcast without first seeking approval from higher-ups in their department. The faculty speech rule appeared to be in response to President Donald Trump issuing an executive…
I got my first Swiss Army knife at a flea market when I was about 11 years old. I have no clue which model it was, but it had the basic tools we typically see nestled between those familiar red handle scales, such as a knife blade, can opener, bottle opener, and corkscrew. I beat the hell out of that knife for a few years. It whittled hundreds of sticks into sharp points. I used it to open cans of Dinty Moore or Chef Boyardee I’d brought to the campfire. It trimmed rope we used in countless forts in the…
Iowa’s always been pretty decent when it comes to gun laws, but the state has made a couple of major improvements over the past few years. In 2021, the state’s permitless carry law kicked in, and the following year voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that declares firearm ownership a fundamental individual right and mandating that courts apply “strict scrutiny” to any future gun control legislation. Those advances could be in danger, though, unless Iowa gun owners turn out in force this November. While Democrat candidates like Christina Bohannan and Josh Turek don’t…
A veteran with mobility issues who served in Operation Desert Storm said he has lost more than $150,000 after a construction project went awry. Ed Smith, 73, of Kansas City, and his family claim they began building another home on their second lot last year. But the family alleged the contractors they hired to complete the project took the $157,000 and did not complete it after over a year. The money was reportedly was paid from Smith’s retirement funds. “In exchange for $157,000 of my dad’s complete retirement funds, we have a hole in our backyard in the wrong place,”…
The Supreme Court will finally hear a case involving a ban on so-called assault weapons. This is fantastic news, to say the least, and I’m still giddy about reading the case’s name in the Supreme Court’s orders as having been granted cert. They’ll hear it, and I think we all know how that one’s going to go.But while it’s good news for us, it’s better news for the people who have been knee-deep in these cases, and Women for Gun Rights is celebrating one of their own who played a key role in this one.As…
As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, Americans will gather for fireworks, parades and ceremonies honoring the nation’s founding. The anniversary is also an opportunity to remember one of the country’s most enduring traditions: the oath to support and defend the Constitution. An Oath to the Constitution, Not a Person Millions of Americans have taken that oath. Whether it is a young Marine raising their right hand for the first time, the president taking the oath of office on the Capitol steps, a newly elected member of Congress or a federal judge, each begins by making the…
Full-size pickup trucks rule America. That goes for public streets, and private meeting rooms at the automaker than build them. And the battle is getting a little exciting as we pass the halfway point in 2026. These trucks dominate the sales charts and the balance sheets of the Detroit Three. Now Ram is pulling closer to being the number two truck than it has in a very long time, and General Motors is pulling away from Ford when you combine Silverado and Sierra sales. The gap between F-Series and Silverado is a little tighter, too. But Ram is the only…
Nissan’s huge efforts to sell more cars over the last decade did the job of moving more metal, but they hurt the company in the long run, its new CEO says. Without pulling any punches, in a recent interview he said that aggressively pursuing the rental car market boosted its share, but those sales came with big discounts and big damage to the company’s image. Now he wants to change it. Sales At All Costs…Came With A Hefty Cost Credit: Nissan “Before, it was like, okay, we want volume, volume, volume,” Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa told Reuters in an interview, describing…
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is intensifying. With over 1,400 cases and 438 deaths tainting the morale of health workers, there is a small piece of good news. A treatment trial has begun. The DR Congo has officially started a trial of potential treatments for the species of virus behind the current deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The strain, called Budibugyo, has been difficult to treat since it is not the more common Zaire strain. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the first patient in the trial has been enrolled,…
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has responded to the Department of Justice’s lawsuit taking on the state’s new ban on Glocks and other striker-fired pistols, and it’s a doozy. First, Bonta claims that the government’s request for a temporary restraining order barring enforcement of the law should have been filed when AB 1127 was signed into law, not when the law took effect on July 1. The DOJ’s lawsuit is based on a pattern and practice complaint, though, and until the law was actually being enforced there was no pattern or practice of violating the…
As the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding, the military is once again confronting a question almost as old as the nation itself: What does religious freedom look like inside an institution built on discipline, uniformity and readiness? The debate isn’t new. Chaplains have served alongside American troops since the Continental Army. Service members have long balanced personal convictions with military requirements. But over the past two years, the Department of Defense has quietly implemented a series of policy changes that collectively offer perhaps the clearest snapshot yet of where faith stands inside today’s armed…
An Army officer who secretly gave abortion medication to a pregnant junior enlisted soldier, causing the loss of her unborn child, was sentenced to 12 years in prison following a guilty plea at a court-martial on June 24, according to Army officials. Capt. Brandon Jones-Adams, 34, pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including intentionally killing an unborn child, domestic violence, fraternization and conduct unbecoming of an officer. The sentence was handed down during a military trial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Washington. According to Army officials, Jones-Adams admitted to secretly placing a pill in the soldier’s drink after investigators determined…
There are exceptions to a great many gun control laws, but not for most of us. Those are usually for law enforcement officers or the military. When they’re performing their duties, that makes perfect sense, but most of those exceptions aren’t limited to just when they’re on the clock. So, it’s more than a little bizarre for someone who has such an exception to then misuse their special status, only to be hoisted up as the poster boy for why gun rights should be further restricted.Take South Carolina. An editorial out of the state just…
Ubisoft continues to announce new features for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, with the latest tease changing how players will be able to explore the deep sea areas in the game. Although the existence of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced may have been one of the worst kept secrets before its eventual reveal, it seems likely that many may have underestimated just how many new features, fixes, and other quality of life improvements Ubisoft Singapore has made to the original game. For most, the biggest change for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was the move to the Anvil Engine, giving…
Earlier this year the National Rifle Association sued their subsidiary organization the NRA (1791) Foundation in federal court. As we previously reported, the judge dismissed some portions of the suit because they felt D.C. Superior Court was the most appropriate venue. The NRA has now filed its complaint in D.C,’s local courts, and in it the NRA alleges that the NRA Foundation — now rebranded to The 1791 Foundation — engaged in trademark infringement, cybersquatting, and claimed their sister organization was withholding funds from the NRA proper. The Foundation claims that they have been upholding…
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has berated and belittled many of his European counterparts expected to attend next week’s NATO summit in Turkey. But host Recep Tayyip Erdogan has drawn on his close ties with the U.S. leader to secure his presence at the Ankara event — an appearance that may even come with a significant gift related to Turkish defense. Trump has frequently praised Erdogan, calling him a “hell of a leader” and a good friend. “I would not have gone for most people,” Trump said last week. “But he called me up. He said: ‘Please, I have…
