The Impossible isn’t the kind of movie you watch casually. It starts with a sense of calm, lets you settle in—and then shatters everything. The film doesn’t build tension—it delivers it. The tsunami hits hard, early, and without fanfare. And from there, things get real—real quick. You don’t follow a plot—you follow a family who is grinding their way through a disaster. And because the story is true, it doesn’t feel like fiction. Naomi Watts does an excellent and believable job of getting pummeled by the tsunami. Tom Holland and Ewan McGregor bring intensity and grit to this realistic and…
Once upon a time, I attempted to do a van-life buildout of a used Sprinter van with my ex-girlfriend. We weren’t particularly handy (or highly motivated to learn), so it didn’t go well for us, and we eventually gave up on creating the kind of chic, functional interiors now plastered all over Instagram. That was over 10 years ago, when there were far fewer options to help people like us create a car-camping living space without knowing how to install a cabinet. So, it’s a welcome sight to see a modular option for converting a vehicle into a functioning overlander.…

The Survival Movie Series begins with one of the most well-known survival films: Jeremiah Johnson. It hooks you in the first few minutes with the promise of freedom and adventure, then spends the next two hours grinding the main character, Jeremiah Johnson, down with one hard truth after another: survival can be really difficult. A man heads into the mountains to live free. No plan. No real skills. Just determination and a rifle. What he gets is a relentless series of tests and lessons—about the land, about solitude, and about the cost of learning too late. For anyone who has…

When a storm separates astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) from his crew and strands him on Mars, there’s no cavalry coming. No quick fix. Just a hostile planet, limited supplies, and a survival clock ticking down. Watney’s not an action hero—he’s a skilled guy with the right mindset, doing his best when everything falls apart. He leans into what he knows—botany, engineering, and problem-solving—to stay alive. Back on Earth, NASA scrambles to help, and his crew considers a high-risk rescue. It’s survival stripped down to skill, grit, and action. What makes The Martian worth watching isn’t just the setting or…

There’s a conversation that happens more and more often on the range, usually right after someone tries to squeeze their newly suppressed rifle into a gun case that no longer fits. It goes something like this: “I love this thing. I just wish it wasn’t so long.” It’s a real problem. Screwing a traditional suppressor onto the muzzle of a rifle adds substantial length. A 24-inch hunting rifle barrel with a 6-inch suppressor attached is now effectively a 30-inch rifle, before you account for the stock. Try stuffing that into a typical case, maneuvering it through a brushy fence crossing,…
With all of the barriers that anti-gun jurisdictions put in the way of residents trying to exercise their constitutional rights, it’s nice to see some sheriffs out there going above and beyond to make sure that getting a concealed carry license is as easy as possible. Crawford County Sheriff Dave Powers is one of those licensing authorities. Yes, residents can make the drive to the county seat of Meadville and apply for their carry permit at the sheriff’s office, but Powers is also hitting the road with all the equipment needed to process applications and…
A measure in the Florida legislature that would allow college and university professors and staff who volunteer to carry concealed sidearms on campus has been overwhelmingly approved by the state House of Representatives. Earlier, the Florida Senate passed HB 757 by a 26-to-10 margin. And recently, the House approved the measure by a vote of 88 to 20. Florida law already stipulates that sheriffs assist district school boards and charter school governing boards in accessing guardian programs and in instituting them. The new bill extends that stipulation to include post-secondary institutions. “A sheriff must also assist public postsecondary educational institutions, as described…
When the United States was first created, it was with the idea that there would be no standing army. There was a concern among our Founding Fathers that a standing army was a tool of oppression, that the military would be used to crush dissent, and that liberty couldn’t be protected with such a force existing. I think we did a good job of addressing those concerns, though. There are problems that we should probably talk about at some point, of course, but it’s not with the men and women in uniform. What the Founding Fathers…

A mere 2 days before the Bassmaster Classic, I found myself sitting in a Kentucky whisky distillery of all places, listening to a new product presentation. Berkley had brought in a host of outdoor media folks to showcase a much hyped, but somewhat guarded, new line of baits. All I knew going into it was that it was unseen by the masses, and Berkley sure was excited about it. Little did I, or anyone in the room, know that a few days later, a young angler would win the Bassmaster Classic using the very thing we were looking at: Berkley…
We’ve been covering the Schoenthal v. Raoul case for several years here at Bearing Arms, but it looks like the case challenging the carry ban on Illinois public transit may soon come to an unsatisfying conclusion. Last week SCOTUS pulled the case from consideration in its Friday conference, which would have been the first time the case was discussed at the High Court. The move led some court watchers to conclude that the justices were planning on granting cert but remanding the case to lower courts after the Supreme Court’s decision in Wolford v. Lopez is released…
A major transparency fight is brewing in New Jersey and it could have serious implications for how gun permit data is handled moving forward. The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) announced that board member and journalist John Petrolino has filed a lawsuit against New Jersey officials after repeated denials of public records requests tied to the state’s carry permit system. While CCRKBA is not a named party in the case, the organization is publicly backing Petrolino’s effort, framing it as a broader fight for transparency in a state long criticized for restrictive gun laws.…
