Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadA major threat during emergencies that is rarely discussed is the possibility that our own brain can work against us. We’d like to think that we would react quickly if something didn’t feel right, but unfortunately, our brains are wired to discount anything that goes against our routine. This mental tendency is called “normalcy bias.” It can cause us to ignore early warning signs, freeze in our tracks, or, worse, wait until it’s too late to act. For urban dwellers, recognizing danger quickly is one thing we can control if we can train our…
We’ve spilled a lot of digital ink on the new gun control laws coming to Virginia, and not without reason. They’re egregious infringements on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. They’re awful. California, on the other hand, is where we’re used to seeing such egregious infringements. Yes, we’ve talked about them, but California could come out tomorrow and say they’re going to round up all of the guns in the state, and no one would be particularly shocked. They’d be outraged, yes, but not totally surprised. However, bad ideas from California are…
If you’ve ever wanted to channel your inner cowboy without spending a fortune on ammo, Winchester Air Rifles has something worth a look. The company recently announced its new Single Action Western Revolver, a CO2-powered six-shooter that looks like it rode straight out of a dusty frontier town. Built from metal with a gunmetal finish and nickel-plated accents, the revolver features a functioning hammer, loading gate, and extractor. In other words, Winchester didn’t just make another BB gun. They leaned hard into the Old West theme. The revolver shoots both BBs and pellets using included cartridges. Winchester includes six BB…
Research published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that COVID-vaccinated veterans had nearly 24 percent fewer all-cause cardiac events — not just those linked to COVID infections. The result suggests that the vaccines may be broadly cardioprotective, according to the researchers. The large study using VA health data found that COVID-19 vaccination significantly reduced the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other major cardiovascular events among veterans — including a reduction in cardiac events with no documented COVID diagnosis, a finding that surprised the researchers themselves. The study, published June 15, 2026, in JAMA Internal Medicine, followed more than…
Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadIn preparedness, your mindset is the foundation for every action you take. It can be the tool that ensures your safety or the trigger that invites disaster. As preppers, we often talk about having the right gear along with tactical and homesteading skills, but what happens when your own thinking becomes the biggest threat? This isn’t about complex survival scenarios. It can happen on any given morning when a simple decision goes wrong. It’s easy to get locked into a false sense of “I’ve got this,” where you override your better judgment. This is…
A new United States screwworm case brings the total in the country to sixteen. Mexico has nearly 30,000 reported cases since November 2024, with 1,800 still active, meaning this could quickly escalate if failures to eliminate the parasite persist. According to a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) screwworm dashboard, the U.S. cases thus far involve cattle, sheep, goats, and one dog. The case confirmed on Monday was in Terrell County, Texas. On Sunday, another case was confirmed in Edwards County, Texas. “The case was identified in a castration site wound. NWS only infests open wounds — it does not…
Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadUnless you’ve been taking a break from current events, you’re aware that the U.S. and Israel have launched a campaign of attacks against Iran, including the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and Shia Cleric, Ali Hosseini Khamenei, which, as expected, prompted Iran to launch missile attacks at a number of Middle Eastern countries. That is prompting a variety of reactions in return. For many, especially in the in-tune-to-dangerous-times prepping community, there’s an unsettled feeling, maybe a worry-induced knot in our stomach, or something else that warns us this latest conflict could carry dangerous second-…
Glaring war hawk, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, has emphatically rejected the United States and Iran’s calls to cease military operations in Lebanon. The minister added that Israel can “achieve results if Lebanon is our playground.” In spite of a ceasefire agreement, which amounted to a surrender to Iran by the US, Israel has continued to strike targets in Lebanon, it says, that are linked to the terrorist group Hezbollah. Ben-Gvir has stated clearly that Israel will not and “cannot agree to a ceasefire in Lebanon,” and US President Donald Trump should be aware of this. Ben-Gvir further described…
I haven’t worn a watch consistently since I was a teenager, despite the cultural shift to hop on the smartwatch bandwagon. However, in the last few years, I’ve done trial runs with other wearables. I experimented with Apple Watch (wasn’t a fan), tried non-screen wearables like the Polar Loop (needs improvement), and even reviewed some purpose-built sports watches by the industry titan, Garmin. Even the Coros Pace 4, which I highly enjoyed, didn’t quite become a permanent fixture in my life. Admittedly, all the options were impressive in some way, but I inevitably gravitated back to bare wrists. However, that all…
A couple of years ago, if you’d asked me what my favorite cities here in Georgia were, Savannah would have been at or near the top of the list. It’s our oldest city, for one thing, and it’s absolutely gorgeous any time of year. It’s where so much of our state’s history was made, from the time James Oglethorpe landed through the Civil War to today. It’s a city so beautiful that even Gen. Sherman wanted to spare it the torch, at least according to legend. But I don’t like some of what they’re doing…
I had the opportunity to visit New York City for the first time last weekend, and to be honest, I felt naked without my carry pistol. However, with the various laws and “sensitive places” restrictions, it’s nearly impossible to even take a handgun into the city legally, much less carry it for self-defense. Fortunately, on the morning of April 12, I was in the security line at LaGuardia Airport, “admiring” the signs threatening me with a multi-thousand-dollar fine if I happened to have a firearm in my carry-on bag. Meanwhile, at the nearby 42nd Street-Grand Central subway station, 44-year-old Anthony…
United States President Donald Trump claimed that the war between the U.S. and Iran is “very close to being over.” Peace talks are expected to resume in the aftermath of the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump called for a naval blockade of the vital waterway on Monday, which led to a new intensification of the war. But he claims that the war is close to being over, as the ceasefire seems to be holding in spite of Iran saying the U.S. and Israel have violated it. Iran Accused Israel and The U.S. Of Violating The Ceasefire “I…
The fight over Boundary Waters mining protections could hit the Senate floor today. Advocates are urging people to call their senators before a possible vote on H.J. Res. 140, which would overturn the 20-year mining withdrawal protecting 225,504 acres upstream of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. If the resolution passes and gets signed, those protections are gone. For people trying to keep sulfide-ore copper mining out of the Boundary Waters watershed, this is the moment to speak up, not after the vote’s already happened. Senate Democrats’ floor guidance for Wednesday, April 15, said consideration of H.J. Res. 140 was…
So far this session, Republicans in the equally-divided Minnesota House of Representatives have voted in lockstep against Democrat proposals to ban so-called assault weapons and large capacity magazines, along with several other gun control measures being pushed by Gov. Tim Walz and Democrat-Farmer-Labor leadership. Those Republicans aren’t just saying “no” to gun bans, though. On Tuesday, GOP House members rolled out a school security bill that would increase spending on security measures and mental health resources, as well as open the door to providing safety funding to both public and private schools. Unfortunately, the plan…
The gun control lobby doesn’t really have anything that resembles the NRA’s Annual Meeting, which kicks off tomorrow in Houston, Texas, and where tens of thousands of gun owners and Second Amendment supporters will gather together for a weekend of fun, freedom, activism, and more. The closest that any anti-gun outfit gets is the annual gala thrown by Brady called the Brady Action Awards. This year’s gala took place last night in New York City, where New York Attorney General Letitia James was among the nominees. Back in 2024, the infamous Eric Swalwell was…
This article was originally published by Ryan McMaken at The Mises Institute. The US Treasury Department last week released its monthly report on federal spending and revenue. March spending for the US federal government was up by more than $20 billion, or by nearly four percent, from March of last year. In spite of the administration’s claims last year that Trump would implement hundreds of billions in spending cuts, the US federal government is now spending at higher levels than anything seen since 2021, when COVID-related spending surged above all previous historical peacetime levels. Meanwhile, the US is on track to…
There’s a needle that often needs to be threaded while talking about gun rights after mass shootings. I normally do a fair job of it, I think, but I’ve completely botched it as well. No excuses, but I will say that it’s tricky sometimes, because even people on our own side are concerned about hurting people needlessly, and I get it. There’s no reason to do so. But on the same token, I don’t appreciate the spin that those of us who value our gun rights and don’t want to see them infringed upon are…
An aviation safety bill seeking to address lessons learned from last year’s midair collision of a jet with an Army helicopter near the nation’s capital was approved by the House Tuesday, but key senators and the families of the 67 victims think the bill still needs to be strengthened. The House bill, called the Alert Act, has the backing of key industry groups, but lawmakers will now have to try to find a compromise that will satisfy the Senate. The National Transportation Safety Board recently said that the legislation, since amended, now addresses its recommendation to require all aircraft flying around…
