In 2024, Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold embarked on a multi-month journey to climb a series of peaks in Alaska — and get there by biking. The show, “The Devil’s Climb,” premiered on Disney+, and now a new documentary short is showing the man behind the camera. “Good Luck, Kid” tells the story of young gun Taylor Shaffer, who wound up as the expedition photographer and videographer by a stroke of luck.
Shaffer spent months on the road with Honnold and Caldwell as they biked (and he drove the van) from Colorado to Alaska. With the show’s director stuck on a mountain in Nepal, Shaffer had one chance to prove himself and his talents.
In the film, we see Shaffer come into his own and bond with these climbing icons. The group also meets with Indigenous activist Marina Anderson in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, which is under threat from large logging operations. As they consider the ethics of exploration and development, the journey takes on a new meaning.
In “Good Luck, Kid,” watch as a young creative rises to the challenge and lives out his dreams.
Runtime: 22 minutes
