The Coast Guard recently rescued a 9-year-old child after dogs attacked him on a beach in the Bahamas.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a statement that authorities took the unnamed child to a local hospital after several dogs attacked him and left injuries across numerous parts of his body at around 10 a.m. July 28 while he was playing on the beach.
The police said that the Coast Guard then transported the child to the U.S. in an emergency evacuation with his father, after medics in the Bahamas said his condition was potentially life-threatening.
“This case reflects the outstanding work of the command center watch team and Air Station Miami crew, whose response and teamwork helped ensure the person was transported to a higher level of care as quickly and safely as possible,” said Southeast District Command Center watch stander OS2 Christian Delgado in a statement.
The child had initially returned to the apartment he was staying at after the attack, and told his mother what had happened after the dogs attacked him. An unidentified man had helped the child at the scene and drove him away from the dogs.
But because he was injured, the woman called Alice Town Police Station and officers took the child to Bimini Community Clinic for medical attention.
There, a medic treated the child for numerous dog bites on his right thigh and arm, left leg, face and head, the police said in a statement.
Realizing the extent of his injuries, authorities enlisted the support of the Coast Guard—which transported the child to Air Station Miami in Florida for further transport to a local area hospital at approximately 12 p.m.
The Coast Guard then released footage showing medics transporting the child on a stretcher at Air Station Miami.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said authorities have determined the owner of the dogs who were involved in the attack, who is reportedly cooperating with the police.
Police advise anyone with information about the attack to contact 911.
Other Recent Rescue Missions
The incident follows other work by the service.
Earlier this month, the Coast Guard suspended a search and rescue mission three days after a boat capsized in San Francisco, leaving one person dead and another three missing.
“Suspending a search is one of the hardest parts of the job and our condolences are with the families of all involved,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Captain Jarod Toczko in a statement at the time, thanking partner organizations for their participation in the rescue effort.
Also, in July, the Coast Guard rescued a man after he was seen sinking in a catamaran in Hawaii.
The man was evaluated by medical staff, which found he had no medical concerns. The boat sunk with some 30 to 40 gallons of diesel fuel, two batteries, and 3 to 4 gallons of oil aboard.
