Sitting on the tailgate of my truck, I fire up the new Optimus Gemini II dual-burner camp stove in order to make some coffee and oatmeal to start the day. With a scenic backdrop of snowcapped mountains piercing a pale blue sky, I twist the knobs on the slim silver stove to get the heat settings just right. Moments later, I’ve got oatmeal simmering in one pot while my coffee water boils in a mug next to it. The new Optimus stove, which fits perfectly into my truck-camping regimen, is considered compact. The stove has two burners, making it a…
Toronto sure looks like a rough place these days. Not even by Canadian standards, but ours. Even the U.S. Consulate isn’t safe, as we found out last month.Yeah, that gun control is going just swimmingly, isn’t it? However, I apparently need to give the Toronto cops their due. They made two arrests in the incident, which is good. It’s everything else they announced about the arrests that has me scratching my head.Toronto police announced the arrests Thursday of a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy in the second shooting at the U.S. Consulate in five…
After a long day in the sun paddling the Missouri River, I hopped off the canoe, walked along the sandbar, and began to set up my tent. As I unfolded the poles, I began to hear the clinking and clanking of knives chopping vegetables and metal spoons hitting the side of a mixing bowl. Soon, the crackle and smoke of fire began to spread over the campsite, and I got my first inkling that something tasty for dinner was on the way. I walked over to the fire with my camp chair in hand, and took a seat to watch…
Violent crime is down across the country, and that’s a very good thing. Our homicide rate hitting record lows is something that we should all be celebrating, and we’re on pace to see it even lower this year. Again, a very good thing. However, the only acceptable number of homicides is zero, and that means there’s always work to be done. We need to be realistic, though, which is why gun control is still a non-starter.But maybe the answer is to not let dangerous people walk around on our city streets? I’m just putting that…
Within the Air Force, officer ranks follow a clear-cut structure, divided into three categories: company grade, field grade, and general officers. Company grade officers range from O-1 to O-3. Climbing the ranks, next are field grade officers, in the O-4 to O-6 range, taking the helm of mid-level command. Finally, at the top of the hierarchy are general officers, O-7 and above, who oversee strategy. Air Force Company Grade Officer Ranks Second Lieutenant (O-1) The rank of second lieutenant is shown through a single gold bar. Proper forms of address include “second lieutenant” or “lieutenant.” Commissioned airmen sometimes may skip…
I got my first Swiss Army knife at a flea market when I was about 11 years old. I have no clue which model it was, but it had the basic tools we typically see nestled between those familiar red handle scales, such as a knife blade, can opener, bottle opener, and corkscrew. I beat the hell out of that knife for a few years. It whittled hundreds of sticks into sharp points. I used it to open cans of Dinty Moore or Chef Boyardee I’d brought to the campfire. It trimmed rope we used in countless forts in the…
Iowa’s always been pretty decent when it comes to gun laws, but the state has made a couple of major improvements over the past few years. In 2021, the state’s permitless carry law kicked in, and the following year voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that declares firearm ownership a fundamental individual right and mandating that courts apply “strict scrutiny” to any future gun control legislation. Those advances could be in danger, though, unless Iowa gun owners turn out in force this November. While Democrat candidates like Christina Bohannan and Josh Turek don’t…

While many reject the idea of good guys with guns stopping things like mass public shootings, the truth is that much of the time, when it happens, the general public never knows that a mass shooting was going to happen. For every White Settlement or Greenwood Park Mall, you’ve got a dozen that never quite make the same headlines. Good guys stop all kinds of violent crimes. Often, it’s as they’re happening to them, but not always. Guns are tools that serve hero and villain alike, but they can only serve the hero if he…
Members of the military deployed overseas often leave their homes behind for months. For many, the time away makes them a target for squatters who use state and local laws to wrongly establish certain legal residency rights to a property. U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody (D-Fla.) has introduced a new bill, the Servicemember Residence Protection Act, to protect active-duty military personnel from this growing real estate headache. The bill would make it easier to evict those illegally living in houses owned by those in the Armed Forces, and would limit their so-called “squatters rights,” including any established timeframe a squatter could…
Ohio hunters may soon have more public ground. Gov. Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 450 on June 15, approving Ohio’s capital budget for fiscal years 2027 and 2028. The nearly $4 billion capital improvements bill funds schools, public infrastructure, parks, trails, state facilities, and other long-term projects across the state. Inside that larger budget is a $25 million line item for State Forest Land Conservation under the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Sportsmen’s Alliance said the money will help the ODNR acquire state wildlife and forestry lands for hunters and trappers. The group also said the state can use…
The Virgin Islands government is trying to moot the Justice Department’s lawsuit over some of its draconian gun laws by adopting new legislation that supposedly addresses the DOJ’s concerns over lengthy wait times for licenses and intrusive storage mandates that allow for warrantless inspections of gun owners’ homes. It remains to be seen whether these changes will have any kind of impact on the litigation, but the new law does create a number of new conflicts with the right to keep and bear arms, and those may also be subject to an amended complaint by DOJ going forward. …
RAPIDS, which stands for Real-time Automated Personnel Identification System, is a program within the Department of Defense that is managed by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC). RAPIDS is responsible for managing the issuance of identification cards to military personnel, their dependents, retirees and other eligible individuals. DMDC has a website to help you locate and find information about where you can renew or obtain new military IDs. The RAPIDS Appointment scheduling website has a robust search function, allowing you to search by state, ZIP code, place name or country. Once you find a location, the RAPIDS site gives you…
For years, a familiar narrative has taken hold across the United States. Young Americans, critics argue, are less resilient than previous generations. Less willing to serve. More interested in screens than sacrifice. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith doesn’t buy it. In fact, after spending nearly four decades leading Marines, including the last several years overseeing one of the nation’s only military services consistently meeting its recruiting goals, Smith says today’s young Americans possess the same character and commitment as the Marines who fought at Iwo Jima, Chosin Reservoir and Fallujah. Their last names have changed, Smith told Military.com during…
The 250th birthday of the United States is also a reflection of the nation’s global diplomacy, notably its long and friendly relationship with ally France. Both are coming together this weekend to honor American veterans. At 11 a.m. ET this Sunday, July 5, at Arlington National Cemetery representatives from both nations, including U.S. Gold Star Mothers who have lost children in recent conflicts, will mark 250 years of shared commitment to liberty by dedicating a restored World War I monument. Gold Star Mothers will place into the memorial “sacred soil” they gathered this past May from French and Belgian World…

This article was originally published by Vincent Cook at The Mises Institute. In his 6/23 Truth Social post (figure 1), President Trump noted that the prices paid by major American oil companies for foreign crude are falling much faster than the prices of their retail products, and suggested that there is something criminal about this that the Department of Justice (DOJ) needs to look into: Figure 1: Trump Denounces Oil Price “Gouging” Source: Truth Social The political motivations for Trump’s grandstanding about oil prices are obvious—the financial interests of the vast majority of voters are much more strongly affected by the retail…
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger ran as a moderate who was just interested in making life more affordable for Virginians. While I disagreed with how she wanted to make it more affordable, I could see that as a laudable enough goal. The problem is that she got into office and immediately jumped on redistricting and gun control, which was not what she told the people would happen. And neither has really gone according to plan.Redistricting got shot down by the state supreme court, and her efforts at gun control–which, in fairness, are extensive–are also blowing up…
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Over 700 sailors and leadership from squadrons and commands based at Naval Air Station Oceana packed into the Globemasters’ hangar Wednesday to hear remarks from Vice President JD Vance about the 250th anniversary of the nation’s military. “When we talk about the Declaration of Independence that protects life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness, it is your protective blanket that guarantees the life of every single one of our citizens. It is your dedication that ensures the liberty of every single one of our citizens,” said Vance. “It is your dedication that ensures the liberty…
