On Monday of this week I wrote about a bizarre civil suit that had gone to trial in Portland, Oregon involving a convicted burglar and the owner of the business he broke into, who shot the man in self-defense.  Kenneth Voyles was seeking $10 million from John Grant, the owner of Touchstone Granite & Marble, claiming the business owner had inflicted emotional and physical damage to him without any justification. As I wrote at the time:Portland’s reputation as a far-left haven for progressives is well-deserved, but there are also a lot of residents who are…

Many survival kits and emergency plans rely on travel to escape threats. Having technology to guide you is always nice, but it’s not necessarily reliable during a disaster. This is why navigation gear and map-reading skills are important focuses for your preparedness.GPS is everywhere- in your vehicle, on your phone, and even in your watch (for some models). It’s great for convenience, but paper maps, compasses, and low-tech gear are more reliable if you know how to use them. Map reading can be simple with a bit of practice, and all low-tech navigation gear is relatively inexpensive.I’ve taught land navigation…

Major Andrés H. Cáceres-Solari arrived at NATO’s Joint Force Command Brunssum in the Netherlands in the summer of 2013 after a successful company command in Japan. By the time he left two years later, he had lost his security clearance, faced a Board of Inquiry, and was on a path that ended with his involuntary separation from the Marine Corps. In his recently published book, “Criminal Negligence in Command,” Cáceres-Solari says the turning point came after he repeatedly raised concerns about emerging threats that were being ignored by the highest officers in the NATO command. Those concerns included indicators of…

A retired police officer who meets federal requirements can carry a concealed firearm across state lines under a law that has been on the books for more than two decades. A retired Navy SEAL or Green Beret generally can’t claim that same federal privilege based solely on military service, regardless of how many years they spent training with and carrying weapons. New legislation in Congress would change that for some of the military’s most highly trained veterans. Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., a former Navy SEAL, introduced the Special Operations Forces Concealed Carry Act this month, a Senate proposal that would…

The firearms industry has no shortage of new handguns. Every year brings another wave of pistols promising better ergonomics, greater capacity, improved triggers, optics compatibility, and the latest features shooters have come to expect. Somewhere between paying for a hotel, replacing the coffee maker that didn’t survive the move, and wondering when your reimbursement will hit your account, many military families realize that a PCS isn’t just physically exhausting — it’s financially demanding, too. We build emergency kits before hurricane season, keep important documents together in case of sudden orders and learn to adapt when deployments or PCS moves arrive with little notice. Preparation becomes second nature. Financial readiness deserves the same level of attention. With National Financial Awareness Day approaching on August 14,…
