Independence Day sales are typically known for deals on grills, lawn equipment, coolers, and ways to stay cool through the summer, and all of those can relate to prepping and survival in some way. After checking out a slew of sales, we’ve rounded up the best gear for preppers to check out to augment their survival kits and preparedness plans.July 4th lands on a Saturday this year, but sales have already started and run through the weekend for the most part. Like most roundups, we’ll keep updating as sales come and go throughout the period, so check back periodically to…
On Monday of this week I wrote about a bizarre civil suit that had gone to trial in Portland, Oregon involving a convicted burglar and the owner of the business he broke into, who shot the man in self-defense. Kenneth Voyles was seeking $10 million from John Grant, the owner of Touchstone Granite & Marble, claiming the business owner had inflicted emotional and physical damage to him without any justification. As I wrote at the time:Portland’s reputation as a far-left haven for progressives is well-deserved, but there are also a lot of residents who are…
Many survival kits and emergency plans rely on travel to escape threats. Having technology to guide you is always nice, but it’s not necessarily reliable during a disaster. This is why navigation gear and map-reading skills are important focuses for your preparedness.GPS is everywhere- in your vehicle, on your phone, and even in your watch (for some models). It’s great for convenience, but paper maps, compasses, and low-tech gear are more reliable if you know how to use them. Map reading can be simple with a bit of practice, and all low-tech navigation gear is relatively inexpensive.I’ve taught land navigation…
A Fort Bliss soldier was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting his 3-year-old son in an attack captured on a neighbor’s security camera. Spc. Baltazar E. Gonzalez, 27, pleaded guilty Aug. 12 to domestic violence, cocaine use, drunken driving and assaulting a civilian police officer, according to the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel. He was sentenced the same day, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel. The child assault happened Feb. 17, 2025, during a party at a home in El Paso, Texas, according to the…
We’re smack dab in the middle of National Shooting Sports Month, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife is celebrating in a big way on Saturday. The department is waiving all of the fees for using public ranges tomorrow, and at two of the state-operated ranges new shooters and would-be gun owners will be able to get some free hands-on instruction. From 10 AM to 2 PM at the Delaware Wildlife Area range in Ashley and the Spring Valley Wildlife Area range in Waynesville, staff will be on hand to give folks some…
Receiving the Medal of Honor requires the recipient to commit to an action that risks their life “above and beyond the call of duty.” This means no one involved would blame the person for not performing the action. Sometimes, this means taking on an enemy while outnumbered; sometimes, it means rescuing a battle buddy from certain death. For U.S. Army Staff Sgt. George Hall, it meant both — only, the person he rescued was himself, and he had to cut off his own leg to do it. George John Hall was a native of Massachusetts who joined the Army long…
U.S. Air Force Airmen recently rescued a five-person Navy crew following what officials described as an “aircraft mishap.” The incident occurred Aug. 10 and involved the deployment of two HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters to rescue five Navy personnel near Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Calif., according to a release issued Aug. 14. The deployment involved airmen from the 355th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (AMXS), assigned to the 355th Wing but geographically located at Nellis Air Force Base, and the 88th Test and Evaluation Squadron (88 TES). U.S. Navy MH-60S Seahawk helicopter, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 8,…
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday downplayed the toll on American sailors enduring a record-setting deployment of nearly nine months on the USS Abraham Lincoln as concerns escalated about mental health and supply issues aboard the aircraft carrier supporting U.S. operations against Iran. In a brief exchange with reporters before flying to New York for an event to highlight falling violent crime rates across the U.S., Trump refuted that family members have raised concerns about the deployment’s length and even said that the more than 260-day deployment is “not nearly long enough.” “That ship is moving right now,…
I get that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson isn’t really that concerned with public safety. He’s more likely to blame Indiana for all of his city’s problems, just like his predecessors have done. However, his latest effort has me shaking my head. See, his approach to public safety is, like so many others, really about making it look like he’s taking the gun industry to task without having to do anything about the actual source of crime in a city that had more murders than all three major cities in relatively pro-gun Florida.Let’s look at how…
Preparing for any special operations program requires developing yourself into a “jack of all trades and master of none.” Simply put, the tactical athlete needs to be good at everything, including strength, power, speed, agility, endurance — run, ruck, swim — muscle stamina, flexibility, mobility and grip. All these need to find their way into your preparation programming. Here is a question from an Air Force Special Warfare (AFSW) candidate who may have just discovered the complexities of putting it all together: Stew, I have been overthinking my AFSW prep training for too long and just wanted to reach out.…
When I still think of the branches of military service, my brain plays a Department of Defense recruiting commercial from the early ’80s: “Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines — It’s a Great Place to Start!” After recruiting efforts like these, I always knew my first job out of high school or college would be in the military. I think it is because of this that I leave out the Coast Guard (even though they are part of the Department of Homeland Security) and now the Space Force from my thought process. Here is a question from an active-duty Air Force…
I had sort of a sideways introduction to Skallywag Tactical. While checking on new offerings from its partner brand, Toor Knives, I was offered the Scallywag Iron Jaw as a ready-to-go tester. While I waited for it to arrive, I did a little digging. Skallywag Tactical was founded by folks with real-world experience in the military, law enforcement, and skilled trades. As such, Skallywag’s knives are designed for abuse in conditions where failure isn’t an option. Actual experience informs the work it’s doing. In short: The Iron Jaw from Skallywag Tactical is a flipper-style folder that opens nearly as fast…
The National Rifle Association, Second Amendment Foundation, and Firearms Policy Coalition are teaming up once again, this time to take on the ban on Glocks and other striker-fired pistols set to take effect in New York next year. The New York law bans licensed firearms dealers and gunsmiths from “selling, transferring, disposing of, transporting, or shipping as merchandise semiautomatic handguns with a cruciform trigger bar” that the state deems “convertible pistols.” Gun control activists argue that Glock and other manufacturers have designed their products to be easily converted into fully-automatic machine guns through the installation…
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Defense is introducing a course centered on Western civilization and Christianity this fall in the schools it operates for military families, part of an effort by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to redirect the education system toward patriotic values and classical learning. The Department of Defense Education Activity operates about 160 schools across 11 countries and educates roughly 70,000 students who are children of active-duty military or civilian service members. Conservatives have eyed the schools — which, unlike most public schools, are run by the federal government — as a testing ground for reshaping education.…
The U.S. will soon announce unprecedented economic measures against Iran, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, intensifying the Trump administration’s effort to force Tehran’s capitulation after almost six months of war. “Watch this space for more announcements coming next week because we are going to apply measures like have never been seen in the history of economic isolation on a country,” Bessent said in an interview with Newsmax on Thursday. The move will be part of a “one-two punch” that includes the continued blockade of Iran’s ports, he added. Fighting erupted on Feb. 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes…
An Army gynecologist who has been accused of secretly recording patients has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. On Wednesday, he appeared before a military judge, Col. Jorge Rivera, at the Lawrence Williams Judicial Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Dr. Blaine McGraw was suspended from his role at Fort Hood in October 2025 after a patient accused him of secretly recording her during a gynecological exam, allegedly filming the individual without consent with a secret smartphone during a pelvic and breast exam. That patient’s allegations were tied into what eventually unfolded into a broader civil complaint wherein investigators…
