Before he served as a combat medic and sniper on Navy SEAL teams in the Middle East, before he ever thought of becoming an officer or going to medical school, and before he even dreamed he’d become a NASA astronaut, military benefits were the “last thing” on Jonny Kim’s mind. In fact, when he enlisted in the Navy as a seaman recruit in 2002, Kim “specifically did not want to go to college,” the now-lieutenant commander with the rare dual designation of flight surgeon and naval aviator told Military.com in a recent interview. But after serving in Iraq — and…
The United States ruling class has banned Americans currently in the Democratic Republic of Congo from leaving the country amid an increasingly spreading Ebola outbreak. About two dozen Americans are now stuck in DR Congo as healthcare workers struggle to contain a Bundibugyo outbreak of the Ebola virus. Washington has already tightened restrictions on those coming from Ebola-stricken areas of the DR Congo. Back in May, when the outbreak began, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised its travel warning for parts of the DR Congo and Uganda, while the Department of Homeland Security directed travelers arriving from…
I do my best to spend the entire summer outside. I am either keeping up the yard, picking berries, or puttering around and fixing things. I also do a bunch of hiking, off-roading, and enjoy a good book or beer from the comfort of my hammock. And I’ve always got at least two knives on me: a folder for my back pocket and a fixed blade on my hip. Since the beginning of May, my fixed-blade belt knife has been the F3 by Reiff Knives. With an overall length of 6.7 inches, full-tang MagnaCut construction, and Micarta handle scales, it’s…
If you think carrying a firearm into a Texas bar is a simple yes-or-no question, think again. According to Armed Attorneys, some of the state’s carry laws are so tangled that even many lawyers misunderstand them. During a recent deep dive (see below), attorneys Emily Taylor and Richard Hayes unpacked everything from the infamous “51% sign” to what they describe as legislative mistakes that still haven’t been cleaned up. The takeaway? Don’t assume the sign on the door tells the whole story. What Makes a Bar Off-Limits? Texas law prohibits carrying firearms inside businesses that earn 51% or more of…
Lots of ways exist to get a full-body workout with little to no equipment. The one below only requires a place to run and a pullup bar. In my program, we often do these on an outdoor pullup bar or a playground with monkey bars, or you could build your own pullup bar or run on a treadmill in a gym. The beauty of this workout is that it works the entire body: push, pull, legs, core and cardio. Here is how it works: The Warmup Calisthenics Half Pyramid With 100-Meter Jogs Plus a 1-Mile Run The warmup is a…
You’ve heard of Yellowstone. You’ve seen the Grand Teton postcards. Now it’s time to find the Wyoming that most visitors never do — where the trails are empty and the peaks are all yours. Wyoming is the least-visited state in the contiguous U.S. — which, when you consider what’s here, makes it the country’s best-kept secret. And those who do visit go to the same predictable places. But, aside from that tiny northwestern corner, Wyoming is wide open, a place where you’ll be all alone in pristine wilderness, surrounded by cirques carved by glaciers, alpine lakes the color of the…
Perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions in automotive maintenance, as well as one of the most frequently misunderstood, is “What engine oil is best for my car?” Set foot in any auto parts store, and you’re likely to be met with immediate information overload – rows of bottles, a confusing array of viscosity grades, and various types of oil that all claim to be the right choice – the selection can be intimidating. Thankfully, the difference between the three main types of oil – conventional oil, synthetic blend, and full synthetic oil – extends well beyond just the…
Anglers in the know have heard of Colorado’s epic annual salmon run. Every autumn, nearly 20,000 kokanee salmon charge up the East and Gunnison rivers to spawn. This is when the state’s best anglers head to the high country of the Southern Rockies, setting up camp along cold mountain streams and casting into waters boiling with vibrant fish. It’s a fly fisher’s dream, and one you don’t need to go all the way to Alaska to realize. Kokanee salmon — a rare, non-native variety of landlocked sockeye — thrive in several places in the Lower 48. However, few are more…
Numerous great movies have been released in 2026 already, from the immensely successful original horror films Obsession and Backrooms to franchise heavyweights like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. More is still to come, with highly-anticipated releases like The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Dune: Part III yet to hit theaters. However, despite the year’s film success and hyped projects, not every film can meet these expectations. Not every disappointing movie is a bad movie, but they can feel like massive letdowns when audiences have been looking forward to a franchise’s return or an ambitious passion project. Some of the…
Almost 30,000 runners participated in the 22nd Annual Pat’s Run on Saturday in Tempe, Arizona, paying tribute to Pat Tillman and raising valuable funds for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships for veterans. Rob Riggle, a Marine Corps veteran who went on to become a successful comedian and actor, served as this year’s celebrity race starter. Adhering to the Marine Corps spirit of never giving up, Riggle completed the entire 4.2-mile race. “I think the world of Pat Tillman,” Riggle told Tempe Today “He’s an example of what leadership should look like and does look like.”Tillman, a former football star at…
