Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadOn September 1, 1859, auroras lit up the night sky. Telegraph lines sparked. Operators were shocked at their keys. The world had just experienced the Carrington Event—the most powerful solar storm ever recorded. If that same storm happened today, we wouldn’t be talking about fried telegraphs. We’d face the potential loss of the power grid and nearly every aspect of modern life that depends on electricity. That’s why, on this Carrington anniversary and the kickoff of National Preparedness Month, I’m re-releasing my conversation with NASA engineer and EMP expert Dr. Arthur Bradley. Dr. Bradley…
Once upon a time, alcohol was banned in this country. It didn’t stop people from drinking it, but it was considered so bad for people that a constitutional amendment was ratified to ban booze. It didn’t last long, thankfully, but the truth of the matter is that it caused irreparable harm to the country. While marijuana isn’t the same as a good bottle of bourbon, the Supreme Court ruled that recreational users of illicit substances shouldn’t be subjected to a lifetime ban from gun ownership. One would imagine this should count as common sense, and…

Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadThis episode came from a recent Mind4Survival listener survey, where I asked: What’s the one thing you need help with most right now in your preparedness? One response stood out: “Having a plan for when things actually HTF. Being prepared is one thing. Planning the steps to start with is another thing.” That’s a good question because while many people focus on the obvious aspects of preparedness, such as gathering supplies, they haven’t thought through the steps they’d actually take if the wheels fall off. Ask anyone who has worked/lived in some sort of…

The California prohibition on the possession of switchblade knives has been challenged. The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that law and petitioners are now seeking an en banc review. Late 2025 the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in the case Knife Rights, Inc. v. Bonta. Attorney John Dillon argued on behalf of the plaintiffs and a decision came from the court in January. On March 16, Knife Rights filed for an en banc review of the panel’s decision.A previously reported, Dillon asserted that the court should side with the plaintiffs…

This week’s Emerging Gear is all about two fundamentals when it comes to outdoor gear: the need to stay warm and the need to carry your stuff. In the unpredictable spring season, a good jacket is a must-have, and there are a number of new ones to check out. Outdoor Vitals dropped its lightest-ever puffer, and Marmot launched a big line of breathable, lightweight fleeces. Mammut teamed up with a chic Scandinavian company to make sleek, minimalist rain jackets. If you’re a skateboarder, take note: There’s a new messenger bag with a designated compartment for your board. Cyclists will want…

Realize all the benefits you’ve gotten from being prepared – less stress, saving money, saving time by not having to run to the store all the time, etc. Instead of focusing on what you haven’t done, recognize how far you’ve come. Take inventory of your preps and appreciate the progress you’ve made. Acknowledge small wins, such as completing a first aid course, growing your own food, or adding to your water storage. 10. Stay Positive Prepping should not be solely about fearing the worst—it should be about equipping yourself for whatever comes your way. Stay curious, continue learning new skills,…
2025 was a rough year for some national parks: Raging wildfires and intense flooding shut down several parks, and, unfortunately, some of those parks show no signs of reopening anytime soon. If you had your heart set on completing the Rim to Rim Trail in the Grand Canyon or camping in Big Bend this year, odds are that your plans will have to wait. Worry not, though: There are plenty of national forests, state parks, and other outdoor sites that will fulfill those same fantasies. Here’s what’s likely to be shut down or disrupted in 2026, and where you should…
For thirty years, Kentucky has been a “shall issue” state when it comes to concealed carry licenses, and since 2019 permitless carry has also been allowed for those who can legally possess a firearm… or at least most of them. Current state law prohibits adults under the age of 21 from carrying a concealed firearm, with or without a valid carry permit. The law could soon change, though, and for the better. On Friday the state Senate gave its stamp of approval to HB 312, which would create a new provisional carry license for 18-to-20-year olds. 🚨The…
