Shawn Ryan’s mind had taken him to some dark places. He’s buried close friends who died by suicide, and he even tried taking his own life. If there’s an opportunity to help veterans not go down the same destructive path, Ryan wants to be at the forefront. That’s why the Navy SEAL veteran and popular podcast earlier this month joined the board of directors for INVI MindHealth, a mental health technology company that helps veterans receive earlier awareness, objective measurement, and human-focused, real-time behavioral health support. “This is personal for me,” Ryan told Military.com. “I know what it looks like…

There’s a concept in law enforcement called “broken windows policing.” Basically, you focus on low-level crimes like vandalism, and it has a sort of trickle-up effect on more serious crimes. It seems to work from what I’ve seen, though “studies” claim it may not be effective and come with all kinds of terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things like racial disparity in arrests. Which seems to be the norm, no matter what theory of policing you engage in, but anyway. The basic idea of hitting people for lower-level stuff, preventing the bigger stuff, makes some…
Whether you’re going on a short overnight trip or a months-long thru-hike, finding the best backpacking backpack is fundamental to success. It not only needs to hold all your necessary gear, but it should also be comfortable enough that you don’t spend the day fidgeting or thinking about your pack. As a thru-hiker, climber, and packrafter, my experience wearing a pack is deep. After loads of research and miles upon miles of rigorous testing, I found the best packs for every use and budget, whether that’s a do-it-all winner like the Gregory Paragon and Maven or something a bit more spend-wise…
A coalition of 18 Democrat attorneys general have filed a brief with the D.C. Court of Appeals urging the court to grant an en banc request by the District of Columbia in order to reverse a decision that found the District’s ban on “large capacity” magazines a violation of the Second Amendment. Though the D.C. Court of Appeals isn’t a part of the federal judiciary, anti-gunners are panicking over the possibility that the decision could give the Supreme Court even more reason to take up the issue, and they’re doing everything they can to convince the appellate court to…
This article was originally published by Artis Shepard at The Mises Institute. When interest rates are pushed artificially low in the midst of constantly-increasing costs of living, the avenues by which average Americans save and grow their wealth are limited. Frugality—demonstrated by spending less than you earn and socking away a portion of your income in bank CDs—becomes an exercise in frustration as widespread price inflation eats away any nominal increase in wealth. In the ensuing search for higher yield, average Americans are pushed to take more risk in order to earn returns that have a chance of outpacing relentless…

Thoughts precipitate deeds. Even when people say they weren’t thinking, what they generally mean is that the thought impulse that triggered their action happened very quickly. But thoughts don’t always turn into actions. People think about a lot of things they never do, from the mundane to the profane. Some think about going to the gym while others think about throttling that guy in the staff meeting who won’t shut up, so everyone can get back to work.So long as no one acts on that second thought, all is well. Yeah, you should probably go…

We all have those one or two recipes from grandma that have been passed down for generations, and they bring back so many memories of family fun around the table. However, what about old-school recipes that have been forgotten? While the depression greatly affected how people fed their families, we can’t overlook the imagination and tenacity of past generations. Many of these recipes are easy on the budget, which makes them a great choice to add to modern tables, given the recent rise in inflation at the grocery store. These old-school recipes may sound odd, but they are quite delicious!…
The suppressor market is booming. With the $200 NFA tax stamp now a thing of the past, more shooters than ever are adding cans to their collections. It’s an exciting time to be in the market. But before you fork over money for a quality suppressor, there’s a question worth asking: Is your firearm actually ready for one? Not every gun is suppressor-ready out of the box. Some need minor modifications. Others need significant work. And a few just aren’t good candidates at all. Knowing where your firearm falls on that spectrum saves you money, frustration, and the kind of…
I spend a fair bit of time writing about where gun control fails. It’s pretty easy to find examples of criminals getting guns easily enough, despite all of the laws in various places, all passed with the stated intention of stopping them from getting their hands on firearms. It’s a running thing here. We also talk about armed citizens using their guns to defend themselves. That’s important, too, because it undermines the anti-gun side’s insistence that the only stories there are involve folks losing loved ones to so-called gun violence. But there’s a third category we…
In 2025, lawmakers passed controversial H.B. 309, requiring anyone 18 or older to carry a valid Utah hunting, fishing, or combination license to enter a wildlife management area in a first- or second-class county. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources says the rule currently applies to Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber counties, and it applies even to people using those areas for hiking, biking, wildlife watching, and photography. Now lawmakers want to replace that license-only system. H.B. 30 would still allow access with a hunting, fishing, or combination license, but it would also create a free digital access permit…
The criminal history of a candidate for the Los Angeles City Council endorsed by the Democrat Socialists of America is becoming an issue in the race, but the candidate himself is leaning into his arrest almost two decades ago while opponents maintain it makes him unfit for office. As the Los Angeles Times reports, when Estuardo Mazariego was 22, he was busted for having a gun and ammunition in his car after being stopped by the LAPD. Mazariego says the gun belonged to a friend, but he was still facing felony charges before he took…
