We’ve logged some shut-eye in hundreds of shelters, heavily tested the most promising, and winnowed down our gear rooms to the 11 best-of-the-best camping tents out there today. In 2026 alone, I, guide manager Nick Belcaster, have taken out six new shelters across the Pacific Northwest on more than a month of overnights. Some tents are wilder nests that thrive in a more backcountry-adjacent use, like the Kelty Discovery Basecamp, while others, like my top pick, the REI Co-op Base Camp 6, are downright frontcountry palatial. I’ve also found having a real gear garage like the The North Face Wawona…
When the One Big, Beautiful Bill passed, it eliminated the NFA tax for suppressors and short-barreled long guns. Now, the reason this is important for today is that the NFA was always billed as a tax, not gun control. In 1934, gun control was untenable. Taxes, less so, and this was a tax to anyone who asked. Now, though, the actual tax is gone, but every other aspect of the law–which were supposed to be about making sure people paid the tax–remains, and there are a couple of lawsuits out there challenging that fact. And then…
Of all the uniquely dangerous jobs soldiers had during the Vietnam War, Army veteran C.W. Bowman’s task ranks near the top of the list. Bowman was a “tunnel rat.” Bowman, a former staff sergeant, volunteered for the highly stressful but important position of finding enemy intelligence rummaging through the Viet Cong’s vast underground tunnel system. He has plenty of wild stories of overcoming fear and what he encountered in those dark, dank tunnels. Bowman shared a few of his memories during a presentation at the Richland Library Main on Feb. 13 in Columbia, South Carolina, according to The Post & Courier. Receiving his…
A country music band in New Orleans is taking a different approach to performing while also promoting mental health awareness among veterans. Vet Jams plays shows across bars in the New Orleans area, melding their love for country into open dialogue with audience members about mental health struggles and the importance of seeking help through therapy.Jason Davey, leader of Vet Jams, served in the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq in 2003. He knows his band has a different approach to playing live than most, but he’s fine with that. “I literally get on the microphone and say it’s okay to…
The Army is preparing to launch a new system that allows certain senior warrant officers to “bid” for retention bonuses in exchange for committing to an additional six-year active-duty obligation. The initiative, formally called the Warrant Officer Retention Bonus Auction, represents a departure from fixed-rate bonus structures and introduces a market-style approach to compensation. What The New Warrant Officer Bidding Program DoesUnder the program, eligible warrant officers submit confidential bids indicating the minimum monthly bonus they would accept to remain in service. After collecting all bids, the Army calculates a single market-clearing rate that maximizes the number of participants retained within…
In the early hours of Aug. 15, 1944, the body of Italian prisoner of war Guglielmo Olivotto was found hanging from a guywire on an obstacle course at Fort Lawton outside Seattle. By nightfall, the Army had begun destroying the crime scene. Within weeks, 43 Black soldiers faced charges. Three of them could be executed. The Army’s own classified investigation would point to a white military policeman as the most probable killer. Not one white soldier was ever charged. The wrongful convictions stood for 63 years. In the Historic District, looking toward Puget Sound. The visible buildings are, left to right,…

It was only six years ago that Rivian was playing with early prototypes of its first vehicle, the R1T, in South America. The adventure was filming and supporting the Long Way Up electric motorcycle expedition and film. On that trip, the company says it realized something important: “the further we push our vehicles, the more fun we can have.” From there Rivian designers, engineers, and adventure enthusiasts have been on all sorts of wild adventures around the globe, many times on their own dime and time. Adventure is baked into Rivian’s DNA and has attracted talented employees that like to…
Not content to make purchasing firearms as difficult as possible, Democrats in the U.S. Congress have reintroduced a bill that would require lawful gun owners to pass a background check every time they purchase ammunition. On February 19, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, and U.S Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, reintroduced what they call Jaime’s Law, which would require ammo purchasers to undergo a National Instant Background Checks System check by the FBI in order to purchase ammunition—a direct infringement of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. “Under current law, dangerous individuals such as violent criminals and…
Anytime the ACLU makes a stand even somewhat related to gun rights, it’s news. For a long time, they ignored the Second Amendment, arguing that other groups handled that right just fine, so they focused on other rights. Then, they became downright anti-gun, and it pissed a lot of people off. I mean, I value all of my rights, and I recognize that my Second Amendment rights are the insurance policy that keeps the rest safe should the courtroom fail. But, when there’s another right they like that seems to be tied in, they can…
