Vortex surprised me. At roughly $200, the Venom Enclosed Emitter delivers significant value, featuring a sealed LED emitter, modern design elements, and broad mounting compatibility, all in a lightweight package. I ran it through a battery of drills and live-fire testing; here’s what I found. Key specs (from testing) Weight: ~1.75 oz Dot options: 3 MOA or 6 MOA Battery: side-mounted (no need to remove sight to change battery) Brightness: 10 daylight settings + 2 NV settings Footprint: DeltaPoint Pro (mates to Glock, S&W CORE with plates; direct-mounts like Shadow Systems and Ruger RXM) Why the enclosed emitter matters I’m…
When Chef Tee Cozy lines up for the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 12, 2025, it’ll be the 11th time the head chef from Cozy Noodles n’ Rice, a Thai restaurant in Wrigleyville, Ill., has run the race. If there’s one thing apparent in the opening scenes of this new short film — the debut in the new PACE SETTERS series by iRunFar in partnership with HOKA — it’s that Chef Tee, who moved to Chicago from Thailand in 1996, loves his city. He also loves running. And he brings that same sense of love to all he does. [Editor’s Note: If you are unable to see the…
The gun control lobby spends almost as much time and energy trying to convince the public that they’re just interested in “reasonable, common sense” measures as it does trying to restrict our right to keep and bear arms. So I wasn’t exactly shocked to see Brady head Kris Brown declare this past week that “Brady is not opposed to the idea of restoring gun rights in principle,” but I was curious to see the fine print attached to that statement. Brown’s comment came in a Substack post devoted to the DOJ’s proposed rule on re-establishing…
This article was originally published by John W. Whitehead and Nisha Whitehead at The Rutherford Institute. “When they came in the middle of the night, they terrorized the families that were living there. There were children who were without clothing, they were zip tied, taken outside at 3 o’clock in the morning. A senior resident, an American citizen with no warrants, was taken outside and handcuffed for three hours. Doors were blown off their hinges, walls were broken through, immigration agents coming from Black Hawk helicopters … This is America.”—Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson When the government can label anyone or anything an enemy in order…
At 9,200 feet in the Colorado Rockies, the U.S. Army built Camp Hale in 1942 to train a new kind of soldier. The 10th Mountain Division was created to fight in snow, ice, and high-altitude terrain that had hampered armies for centuries. Its formation was the result of a civilian campaign led by Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole, the founder of the National Ski Patrol, who convinced Army leaders that the United States needed a force capable of operating in extreme cold-weather conditions.Over the next two years, thousands of men learned to ski, climb, and survive at Hale, developing tactics and equipment…
The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners have filed a petition for en banc review with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, seeking full court reconsideration of their ongoing lawsuit against New Jersey’s sweeping “sensitive places” gun-carry restrictions. The case, Koons v. Attorney General of New Jersey, challenges the state’s post-Bruen legislation, which designates an extensive network of “sensitive places” where even licensed concealed carriers are prohibited from possessing firearms. Critics argue the law effectively nullifies the right to carry across much of the state. A Law Designed to Defy Bruen Following the Supreme Court’s 2022 New York State…
Is the bike going to explode? I didn’t know, but I was about to find out. In September, I was riding the Santa Cruz Bullit X0 AXS RSV electric mountain bike, and following Kurt Sorge, three-time Red Bull Rampage winner, into the new double-black feature — a 30-foot wall ride — on Obsidius trail at the RED Bike Park. I was curious to find out how the new Santa Cruz Bullit would handle such a large drop — I’d never hit one that big on an e-mountain bike. Zoning in, I followed Sorge’s speed and mimicked his pop onto the…
The Famous Stone Glacier Skyscraper 2P The Stone Glacier Skyscraper 2P was released in 2020 to much acclaim by the backcountry hunting world. Many mountain hunters couldn’t wait to get their hands on the Bozeman, Montana-based company’s take on a 4-season shelter, myself included. I’d made do with a couple of 3-season tents for sheep and goat hunting over the years but was excited to see what the Skyscraper was made of. While supply chain issues kept me from getting to use one in August, I had a tent by October for a week-and-a-half-long elk hunt. I weathered many nights…

A 74-year-old woman was attacked by a bear while walking her dog, prompting Members of the Environment Committee in Connecticut, Sen. Stephen Harding and Rep. Patrick Callahan, to urge Senate and House leadership to take action. S.B. 1148 aims to manage the growing bear population in the state. If passed, it would legalize bear hunting. This attack is the second case this week in which a bear was euthanized due to dangerous behavior.…
Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is about the rimfire firearm world and its many types of firearms, shooting sports, ammunition, and history! I am back at the helm filling in for Luke C for this week. Last week Luke covered his first impressions of the new Ruger Super Wrangler Revolver. Today we are doing a little story time. This will sort of be a hybrid of Rimfire Report and Armorer’s Bench. Let’s talk about fixing my dad’s Marlin Model 60. More Rimfire Report @ TFB: Little Background: Fixing My Dad’s Marlin Model…
The Pentagon is expanding the use of wearable fitness trackers to help predict outbreaks of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 as use of the technology, such as watches and rings, spreads in the military despite early security concerns. The Defense Innovation Unit, an entity within the Pentagon focused on pairing commercially available technology with military uses, says that it had success during the pandemic in identifying infections by marrying an artificial intelligence algorithm with a commercial device. The breakthrough allowed the DIU to predict sickness and transmissions days in advance. Its announcement comes as the Pentagon looks to apply wearable…
We’re routinely told that mass shootings are unique to the United States, mostly because we lack the gun control laws that exist throughout most of the world. This is especially true when people want to compare the US and Europe. Yet Europe often has its own issues. While mass shootings might not be as common, they still happen there, as we saw in Germany earlier this year. But hey, Europe has gun control. There’s no chance of another mass shooting happening there, right? Oh, wait, there is. A man fatally shot three people before turning his gun on himself, Portuguese…
The Best Breakfast Sandwich There’s no denying: An excellent breakfast sandwich will take you a long way up a mountain before you stop for lunch or stop to process the critter you just killed. McDonald’s has a good handle on the system, but you can easily do better with quality meat, egg, and cheese. I’m using wild hog sausage, but you could also use turkey sausage, or you could use some meat from an animal you killed yesterday and knife grind it. Alternatively, a slice of bear ham would be good, too. Duck eggs are rich and pair nicely with…
Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 85. This week we’ll be diving back into some normal podcasts now that NRAAM 2023 is well out of the way and everyone is apt to get back to talking about their favorite niche subjects that pop up across the web. Podcasts once again are my go-to source for background entertainment when I travel – mostly air travel these days. This week I’ve lined up a few of my favorite podcasters who have some fresh new discussions for us including Vortex Nation’s #10MinuteTalk, IV8888’s Gun Gripes, and a neat interview between Ron Spomer and Hickock45.…
Two boaters were rescued from a marshy island in Virginia after they were stranded in poor weather, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The boaters were rescued on the same day a tornado devastated parts of the Virginia coast. Rescuers got a call for help from the boaters on the afternoon of April 30, according to a news release from the Coast Guard. A boat captain and his passenger were stuck on Mink Island, nearly two miles offshore — and the weather was worsening, the release said. The boaters were beached on the island due to “deteriorating weather” and couldn’t get…

Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story sustained an estimated $3 million in damage from Sunday’s tornado in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which ripped the roof off a barracks building, downed approximately 100 trees and left the entire base without power for about 18 hours. “And that list could grow,” said Capt. Michael Witherspoon, the commanding officer. After touching down Sunday evening in the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach, the tornado went northeast, crossed Broad Bay and took aim at the joint military base. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Wakefield confirmed Monday morning that the cyclone was an EF-3…
This article was originally published by Manuel García Gojon at The Mises Institute. The taming of monetary policy necessary to slow price inflation has triggered a corrective trend in the valuation of financial instruments. Many big banks in the United States have substantially increased their use of an accounting technique that allows them to avoid marking certain assets at their current market value, instead using the face value in their balance sheet calculations. This accounting technique consists of announcing that they intend to hold such assets to maturity. As of the end of 2022, the bank with the largest amount of assets marked…
