I’m sure we all remember the dreadlocked DEA agent going on about how he was the only one professional enough to handle his .40-caliber Glock, right before shooting himself in the leg. Police officers are trained in how to use their firearms safely, but like any group of humans, some listen, and others don’t. Mr. DEA was a prime example.

However, we now have a new contender for the title of dumbest law enforcement officer’s gun handling.

This one comes out of anti-gun Pasadena. California has a ton of gun control laws because regular folks like you and me can’t be trusted, but police officers are exempt from at least some of these.

Unfortunately, a couple of Pasadena cops seem to think guns are toys.

A patrol car can be seen in the video pulling up behind two officers who were standing by another vehicle.

One of the officers standing outside drew his gun and pointed it at the officer inside the patrol car before putting it back in the holster.

The officer inside the car then drew his gun, and it discharged with a bullet going through the windshield, striking one of the standing officers in the shoulder.

I tried to embed the video, but Facebook–where I, personally, saw it–is trying to say that it’s unavailable in the embed, even though I can still watch it, so you’ll have to settle for a link.

The injured officer has since recovered and is facing disciplinary action for what happened. The report doesn’t say if the officer inside the vehicle has been disciplined or not, because while this was described as a “horseplay” incident, what it really should be described as is absolute stupidity.

Rule one is that you don’t point a gun at anything you’re not prepared to destroy. While I get that some people might want to include their coworkers in that category, you still don’t point guns at them. This is especially true if you’re wearing a badge for a living.

They’re supposed to be the example, and typically are for millions of Americans. I know that they’re still people, which means they’re never going to get everything right. This is one of those cases where there really isn’t any excuse for it, though. There’s no universe where this kind of “horseplay” should be considered acceptable. None whatsoever.

Learn from these officers’ mistakes. This is something that literally no one should be doing, whether you’re an officer or not. Hell, even with airsoft guns, unless you’ve got the protective gear on for a milsim game, don’t even do it then. To quote Ralphie’s mom, “You’ll shoot your eye out.” More accurately, someone else will.

But with live firearms, it’s even more idiotic to engage in this kind of thing. I get the whole “this is my safety” mentality from people who watched too much Blackhawk Down, but why risk it? Yes, your finger is a safety, but so are the basic rules of firearm safety.

Unfortunately, for many officers, being around guns so much makes them feel a bit too comfortable with them. They don’t maintain that healthy fear of doing something stupid, so stuff like this happens.

Be better than that.
