Nocpix H50R PRO Hits the Field Instead of Chasing Specs
Thermal scopes keep getting sharper and smarter, but most new models still feel like refinements of the same formula. The Nocpix RICO 3 PRO H50R is different. Its autofocus system and redesigned zoom controls change how the optic is actually used in the field.
I spent two nights hunting hogs and coyotes with the H50R PRO in difficult thermal conditions. Temperatures remained around 90 degrees after dark, humidity was high, and recent storms had left the fields wet and muddy. Despite the limited thermal contrast, the image remained surprisingly detailed and useful at distance.
More importantly, we put the scope to work. We shot a lot of pigs, and I successfully pulled off a double on coyotes. Nocpix H50R PRO Autofocus Actually Works
The standout feature of the Nocpix RICO 3 PRO H50R is autofocus. Traditional thermal scopes require the shooter to turn the objective focus whenever the target distance changes. That is easy on a bench, but annoying when animals move between close, medium, and long distances.
The RICO 3 PRO uses data from its integrated laser rangefinder to focus the image with the press of a button. I programmed the included remote for autofocus and mounted it on the rifle’s handguard. That let me sharpen the image without reaching forward and disturbing my shooting position. Nocpix also retained a manual focus control, so the shooter is not completely dependent on the automatic system.
More importantly, the H50R PRO autofocus worked. It consistently produced a crisp image throughout both nights. It felt somewhat like using the camera on a modern smartphone. Point the optic at the target, activate autofocus, and the system does the work.
Ocular Zoom 2.0 Fixes a Frustrating Thermal Problem
The second major improvement in the Nocpix H50R PRO is Ocular Zoom 2.0. The H50R PRO combines optical enlargement through the eyepiece with digital magnification. A traditional-style throw lever sits where the magnification ring would be located on a conventional riflescope, making it fast and intuitive.
Earlier ocular-zoom designs could enlarge the image but push menu icons, range data, and ballistic information outside the usable field of view. The new system resizes that information as magnification increases. The reticle, rangefinder data, and ballistic solution remain visible instead of disappearing from view.
640 Thermal Image Quality That Fights Through Heat
The H50R PRO uses a 640×512, 12-micron, 60 Hz thermal sensor paired with a 50 mm f/1.0 objective lens. It has a sub-15 mK NETD rating, 3X native magnification, up to 4X digital zoom, and a claimed detection range of 2,840 yards.
Inside is a round 1.03-inch AMOLED display with 2560×2560 resolution. The circular view feels more like looking through a conventional riflescope than staring into a rectangular screen. The optic offers seven color palettes and eight reticle options, including a dynamic reticle and a user-configurable design.
The Nocpix H50R PRO image quality was particularly impressive considering the conditions. Heat and humidity reduce thermal contrast and can make animals blend into the background. Even under those conditions, the H50R PRO produced enough detail to detect, identify, and engage animals effectively.
A Fast 1,600-Yard Rangefinder Feeds the Ballistics
The integrated laser rangefinder is rated to 1,600 yards. In use, it was fast and responsive, with what appeared to be a tighter beam than earlier Nocpix rangefinders.
The onboard ballistic calculator uses the ranged distance along with the shooter’s programmed velocity, ballistic coefficient, environmental information, and zero data to provide a corrected hold. A short press gives a single range, while holding the button activates continuous scanning.
Long Battery Life and Controls Built for Darkness
Nocpix rates the removable NBP-8 battery for up to 10 hours and seven hours at temperatures as low as minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit. During our hunts, the scope ran about five hours per night and still showed more than half its battery remaining.
The battery can be charged in the scope through the magnetic connection or removed and charged directly by USB-C. A spare battery is also included.
The H50R PRO records video to 64 GB of internal storage. Files can be transferred by cable or through the Nocpix app. Recoil-activated recording captures the shot even when the shooter forgets to begin recording manually. Video can also be reviewed inside the scope, which can help recover an animal when landmarks become difficult to recognize in the dark.
The controls are easy to find by feel, the menu is straightforward, and the included remote can be customized for ranging, autofocus, magnification, and other functions. The magnesium housing feels solid, and the included quick-detach mount held zero throughout testing.
640 Versus 1280: Where the H50R PRO Gives Ground
The H50R PRO produces an excellent image, but it does not erase the difference between 640 and 1280 resolution. When digital magnification is pushed hard, the 640 image breaks down sooner because there are fewer pixels available to enlarge.
Hunters who routinely zoom deeply at long range may still prefer a 1280-class optic. For most coyote and hog hunting, however, the H50R PRO’s 3X base magnification, 50 mm lens, autofocus, and strong thermal sensitivity provide a useful balance of field of view, identification range, and detail.

The biggest compliment I can give it is simple: the new technology did not get in the way of hunting. It made the scope faster and easier to use. It helped us kill a pile of pigs, and it gave me the speed and confidence to take a double on coyotes.
