Marine Corps Reserve Bonuses Offer Marines Up to $40,000

The Marine Corps is offering eligible Marines up to $40,000 to join or stay in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve under a new retention and affiliation bonus program that took effect this week.

MARADMIN 377/26, released Aug. 20, establishes the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) Retention and Affiliation Bonus program. It includes the Reserve Affiliation Bonus for Marines coming from the active component, Individual Mobilization Augmentee program, or Individual Ready Reserve; the Selective Retention Bonus – Reserve for current SMCR Marines; and a smaller Reserve Transfer Bonus. The maximum monetary incentive combination, including unit kickers, is $40,000.

The previous version of the program was canceled the same day this one took effect, according to a separate Marine Corps message.

Bonus Amounts and Service Obligations

For the Reserve Affiliation Bonus, active-component, Individual Mobilization Augmentee, and Individual Ready Reserve corporals through master sergeants in designated critical military occupational specialties can receive $30,000 or $25,000 for a 36-month obligation.

The higher amount applies to one list of MOSs; the lower amount applies to a second list. Applicants must have less than 20 years of total military service and obtain a three-year Reserve End of Current Contract through reenlistment or extension.

Current SMCR Marines are eligible for the same $30,000 or $25,000 amounts for a 36-month extension under the Selective Retention Bonus – Reserve. Shorter options pay $10,000 for a 24-month extension or $5,000 for a 12-month extension. The 12-month option is limited to corporals and sergeants.

A separate Reserve Transfer Bonus of $10,000 is available to some active-component corporals through staff sergeants with fewer than 15 years of active service for a 24-month obligation. That option cannot be combined with the larger packages or unit kickers.

Unit kickers of $5,000 or $10,000 can be stacked on the $25,000 or $30,000 incentives for Marines who commit to a 36-month obligation at designated units and locations. That combination produces the $40,000 ceiling. A specific listing of the units offering the unit kicker is provided in the MARADMIN.

Who Qualifies

Eligible Marines must be corporals through master sergeants and assigned or eligible for assignment to a Billet Identification Code that matches their grade and MOS on the unit’s Table of Organization. Master sergeants generally need fewer than 24 years of service. Gunnery sergeants and staff sergeants need fewer than 18 years of satisfactory service.

Marines who previously received an affiliation bonus to join the SMCR from the active component, Individual Mobilization Augmentee program, or Individual Ready Reserve are ineligible. So are those with non-judicial punishment in the previous 12 months, those who failed promotion to the next grade, or those reduced in rank.

Active-component Marines must complete any existing bonus or Blended Retirement System Continuation Pay obligations and cannot receive waivers of those commitments.

The program is designed to fill validated billet requirements and improve unit readiness. It supports the Commandant’s retention priorities by encouraging experienced Marines to continue serving and by easing transitions from the active component and Individual Ready Reserve into the SMCR. Similar incentives have been part of Marine Corps efforts to maintain a trained Reserve force, including earlier enlistment and retention bonus packages.

How to Apply

Requests are submitted through the Total Force Retention System and require a signed Statement of Understanding. Marines may be required to waive reasonable commuting distance.

Inter-unit transfers to eligible billets need prior approval. Payment generally occurs upon joining the unit, though approvals for Marines already assigned to their unit follow a different timeline.

The specialties approved for the bonuses cover a range of infantry, reconnaissance, intelligence, aviation maintenance, logistics, and other critical fields. Marines should review the message or contact their career counselor or prior-service recruiter to confirm eligibility for their specific MOS and unit.

The program remains in effect until superseded. Funding is limited, and approvals continue until allocations are exhausted. Marines considering a move into the SMCR or an extension of their current Reserve obligation now have a clear, time-sensitive financial incentive to act.
