This article was originally published by William L. Anderson at The Mises Institute. To the Democratic Socialists of America and their fellow travelers, The Moment has arrived. With the victory of Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s mayoral election Tuesday night, the DSA has another attractive face to add to its advocates nationwide, someone to complement Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders as socialism marches to its inevitable triumph over the entire United States. As one who believed that the U.S. was on its way to a real revolution of free markets and personal freedom with the election of…
Before refrigerators were commonplace in American homes, root cellars were the way many families stored their harvested food for the winter. From the 18th century through the early 20th century, root cellars helped preserve potatoes, squash, garlic, carrots, onions, cabbages, kale, beets, Brussel sprouts, apples, and other crops.Typically a below-ground excavation, the root cellar was usually located adjacent to the house or barn. Sometimes these storage areas were just a few feet square in size, and, other times, they were large enough for an adult to stand in and move around. This type of cold storage doesn’t have to be a…
I would recommend keeping some tissues handy for this one. The documentary Ofrenda follows endurance athlete Sara Aranda as she attempts to set the first female record for one of the most brutal stretches of terrain in the United States. But it’s Aranda’s emotional battle — and the heart-wrenching poetry that accompanies it — that makes this short film so compelling. “To inherit is often to carry an unknown shape that lingers in the dark, even if that shape has a name: BRCA1,” Aranda narrates early on in the movie. During Aranda’s college years, her mother was diagnosed with BRCA1, a genetic…

If Daniel Clarke’s new studio, Unfeatured Films, gets its way, the future of documentary filmmaking, and how we engage with history, could change in a big way. According to Variety, Clarke, a filmmaker and creative agency veteran, launched the studio with a mission to turn archival images into cinematic, emotionally rich videos through the use of Artificial Intelligence. The goal is to make history feel alive and relevant, especially for younger audiences, without losing the care and authenticity that traditional storytelling demands. And when it comes to military history, that kind of vivid, immersive approach could hit especially hard. While the studio’s first…

There’s an assumption people make about outdoor gear that prioritizes circularity and sustainability. Many people expect to sacrifice durability and performance in exchange for these “greener” designs. Osprey and Houdini wanted to change that. So this season, the two brands teamed up to design a line of four-season technical packs, dialed for backcountry skiing, climbing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. The packs are made from recycled materials, repairable, and (according to the brands) fully recyclable at the end of their useful lives. On November 6, Osprey and Houdini unveiled the Allt pack line. (Photo/Osprey) “Allt is proof that circularity-focused products…
Two recent court decisions in Florida have declared parts of the state’s gun laws unconstitutional, shaking up the legal landscape in one of the nation’s most firearm-friendly states and prompting calls for lawmakers to act. Despite Florida’s reputation as a pro-gun state, its Republican-controlled Legislature passed several restrictive measures after the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Those included raising the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21 and maintaining a ban on open carry. Now, both of those laws are under fire, and the courts appear to be siding with the Constitution. Broward County…

The Marine Corps is continuing its revamp of its personnel policies with a new initiative that offers quick promotions to sergeant for its “highest-quality corporals,” according to a press release from the service. The Marines say that this new program, dubbed the “Small-Unit Leader Initiative,” is being rolled out not only to capitalize on the “recent retention campaign success” but to continue the push to remake the Corps into an older and more mature force. According to a forthcoming administrative memo, the program will be open to Marines at the rank of corporal who have served for at least three…
School district officials in Newport News, Virginia, are seeking the dismissal of a $40 million lawsuit filed by the elementary school teacher who was shot by her 6-year-old student during class in January. The motion, filed Wednesday in the Newport News Circuit Court, argues that the injuries suffered by first-grade teacher Abigail Zwerner should be remedied as a workers’ compensation claim, and that state law “exists for the benefit of employees for the purpose of providing coverage for workplace injuries without having to prove negligence on the part of the employer.”Zwerner’s negligence complaint said she incurred “physical pain and mental anguish”…
Training under the tutelage of a reputable firearms instructor is the best way to improve your shooting skills, but regardless of the instructor’s ability, merely attending their course isn’t enough. To derive maximum benefit from the training, there are steps you’ll need to take before, during and after the course. While not an exhaustive list, these seven suggestions will help you get the most bang for your buck, so to speak.Research The CourseDon’t decide to attend a shooting course based solely on the reputation of the instructor or course title. The ATF is supposed to try and keep guns out of the hands of criminals, though it seems they spend most of their time making life difficult for law-abiding gun owners. Now, though, it seems they have a target that isn’t you or me. President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act last summer, making it a federal crime to traffic in firearms and stiffening penalties for “straw purchases” made on behalf of people who aren’t allowed to own guns. Since then, new data from federal prosecutors shows they’ve charged 31 people in 17 cases under the new legislation. Bureau…
Over the last few years, SIG has released a couple new variations of their P320 line. Last year, I wrote up a review of their Spectre Comp which you can find the link to here. Their newest member of the P320 family is the new P320 AXG Legion. This model takes the concept of a compensator integrated into the slide from the P365 Spectre Comp. The larger expansion chamber of the P320 in conjunction with the AXG metal frame and this P320 feels different from the other variations. Let’s take a closer look at the SIG Sauer P320 AXG Legion.…

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we talked about perception versus reality when it comes to carrying a concealed firearm. If you happened to miss that article, be sure to check it out by clicking the link here. This week, I want to address a few questions I’ve gotten over the last few weeks since summer is coming. People have asked what are some tips to carry easier during the summer months and what kind of gear should they buy to help them out. While buying things can help somewhat, the bigger issue is people…
WASHINGTON — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol urged ever more strengthening of the U.S.-led security alliance against nuclear-armed North Korea on Thursday, drawing cheers from Congress as he saluted the “great American heroes” who helped preserve his country’s democracy in the Korean War. Democratic and Republicans lawmakers rose to their feet again and again to applaud during Yoon’s address to a joint meeting of the House and Senate, in a speech that stressed security cooperation at a time of increased tension with both North Korea and China. Yoon also cited U.S.-Korean high-tech trade ties creating thousands of jobs in…
Todd and Lisa Sturgeon knew their son was dealing with mental health issues. But before Connor Sturgeon, 25, opened fire at a bank in downtown Louisville, they never fathomed that he could carry out an act of such horrific violence.“I’m afraid that whatever we come up with as the cause still isn’t going to make sense,” Todd Sturgeon told NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie in an exclusive “TODAY” show interview that aired Thursday.Lisa Sturgeon said she and her husband did not see any signs of violence before their son, an employee at Old National Bank on East Main Street, walked into…
