A Utah woman fighting to get her Second Amendment rights restored more than a decade after she became a prohibited person because she wrote a bad check is going to have to wait a little longer to learn what the Department of Justice has to say about her legal fight. Melynda Vincent petitioned the Supreme Court to accept her case in early May, and the DOJ originally had a June 11 deadline to respond.  In early June the Solicitor General’s office requested and received a one-month extension, which pushed the deadline to July 11. There’s a very old saying that I first saw on a bumper sticker decades ago. It read, “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” At the time, I really didn’t grasp the full meaning of that. Were they saying that guns being outlawed would turn people into outlaws? Were they saying criminals would still have guns? It took me a while to realize that, whether it was intended to or not, it was kind of saying both.Gun control laws turn some people into criminals because they’re simply done playing along, and criminals are…

It’s difficult to overstate the intensity of the Badwater 135. Billed as “the world’s toughest foot race,” this ultramarathon takes runners through California’s Death Valley — the hottest region on the planet — in the middle of summer. Finishing this race within the allotted 48 hours is a massive undertaking for any athlete of any age. Runners must overcome temperatures above 120 degrees, as well as the swollen feet, bloody…

The vast majority of us are familiar with America’s National Parks. But what about the National Seashores? In short, national seashores are a part of the National Park Service (NPS) but have a different designation — like a national monument or national forest. Federally appointed by Congress as coastal areas that are of natural and recreational significance, national seashores focus on the preservation of a coastline’s natural values, while also providing water-oriented recreation and education. Like many people, I spend a fair bit of time on YouTube. Not all of it by any stretch, but enough. Sometimes, YouTube’s suggestions are absolute crap, but on Monday, I got an interesting video suggested. Kentucky Ballistics did another video with his infinitely memeable 4 bore rifle. It seems he decided to shoot a couple of ballistics dummies with the shoulder-fired cannon and, frankly, you’ve got to see it. Now, we’ve heard firearms described as being able to take someone’s head off, but that’s the first I’ve seen that could literally do it. I don’t care who you are,…

Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced Monday that the government is changing the terms of its firearm ban, the CBC reported. Mendicino said that the ban will not expand the list of firearms that are designated as illegal. Alternatively, a new committee would review which firearms, manufactured after the C-21 ban, should be removed from the current market. According to Mendicino, the less stringent regulations would still meet its goal of reducing gun violence while being considerate of Indigenous and rural firearm needs. Canadian Firearm Ban Evolution Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised in 2019 to ban “assault weapons.” In…

Chicago police are making thousands of arrests for illegal possession of a firearm, but as it turns out the strategy isn’t doing much at all to make the city a safer place; especially given that the vast majority of non-fatal shootings and over half of all homicides are going unsolved. The Marshall Project has done an outstanding job of highlighting what’s actually happening in the Windy City when it comes to fighting “gun violence”; which all too often takes the form of arresting and charging individuals with felony offenses simply for possessing a gun without a valid Firearms Owner ID…

Thankfully, suppressor use and ownership have become more and more common in recent years. As shooters become more aware of the passive dangers involved with shooting, like lead poisoning and hearing loss, steps are being taken to reduce health hazards. Suppressors are probably the most effective tool we have against hearing loss. If you didn’t hear that last sentence, it might be time to pick one up! However, silencers (or suppressors, use whichever you want, nobody cares) have some drawbacks. The primary problem is that they get very hot. This means mirage during precision shooting. It also means some very…
