Firing a top military lawyer would require a congressional notification that includes a substantive justification under a defense policy bill advanced by the Senate Armed Services Committee this week. The provision in the Senate’s version of this year’s National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, marks Congress’ first concrete, bipartisan action in response to the Trump administration’s purge of the top uniformed lawyers for the Air Force, Army and Navy earlier this year.Under the bill, Congress would have to receive a rationale within five days of the removal of a service’s top judge advocate general, a congressional official who briefed reporters on…

The carrier USS George Washington will shift homeports in 2024, replacing the USS Ronald Reagan in Yokosuka, Japan. A Texas judge rejected a motion Wednesday to grant Army Sgt. Daniel Perry a new trial after he was found guilty last month of killing a 28-year-old Air Force veteran, Garrett Foster, during an Austin Black Lives Matter protest in 2020. The decision comes as the Army is in the process of pushing Perry out of the service. “Sgt. Perry’s unit has initiated an administrative separation under Army Regulation 635-200 due to his conviction,” a spokesperson from the 11th Airborne Division – Perry’s unit – told Military.com in a statement. “In the interim, the unit is changing his duty status…
The pump action shotgun remains an iconic American firearm, right up there with a Colt Single Action Army and a Winchester lever gun. Despite cut rate instructors declaring it dead over the last 20 years, it continues to sell out of stores as fast as makers can produce them. When I was talking to an executive from one of the major manufacturers a couple of weeks ago, he told me that they could not take another order for the next six months and still couldn’t make enough to keep up with the orders they have. So, to paraphrase Mark Twain,…

Mossberg’s 940 Pro Field is one of the models that evolved from the 2020 introduction of the 940 JM Pro. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, a lot of us watched what followed. The news wasn’t good, of course, but then we saw and heard about officials confiscating guns in a supposed effort to curb the violence that was supposedly raging across the city. Gun rights didn’t matter, apparently. Since then, a lot of states have passed laws preventing such things from happening there. Surprisingly, Alaska wasn’t one of those states. Then we saw the pandemic when a lot of locales decide that gun rights didn’t really matter, that they could and should shut down gun stores. Again, a lot…

The Department of Veterans Affairs continues to struggle to protect whistleblowers in its ranks, with two-thirds of whistleblowers reporting allegations of retaliation from 2018 to 2022, the Government Accountability Office has found. Overall, allegations of retaliation against all federal whistleblowers declined from 2018 to 2022, but cases at the VA involving retaliation rose during the time frame, according to a GAO briefing to members of Congress in February that was released Wednesday. The watchdog agency found that VA cases alleging whistleblower retaliation or other prohibited practices make up more than a third of the workload of the Office of Special…
The Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) Program is a prototyping effort to develop squad-level small arms for the U.S. Army. NGSW consists of a Rifle (NGSW-R), Automatic Rifle (NGSW-AR), a 6.8mm cartridge and a shared Fire Control (NGSW-FC). The NGSW-R aims to replace the M4A1, and the NGSW-AR would supplant the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW).When used in SIG Sauer’s NGSW-AR light machine gun, the 6.8x51mm round maintains the use of disintegrating links for feeding. Each belt includes a spoon, which can be fed and pulled through the feed tray, eliminating the need to open the cover. This makes loading…
