Army planners are moving toward a sweeping overhaul of the service’s professional military education pipeline for noncommissioned officers, part of an aggressive push to slash costs. The overhaul is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks and primarily aimed at slashing the cost of sending soldiers to school — particularly travel expenses like rental cars, meals and lodging, internal documents and correspondence between service planners reviewed by Military.com show. The changes could significantly reduce the length of midlevel NCO courses. The Advanced Leader Course, or ALC, and Senior Leader Course, or SLC, would be compressed from eight to 16 weeks down…
Unlike a regular flood, a flash flood occurs suddenly, often catching people off guard and bringing a wall of water often filled with debris. Flash flooding often accompanies heavy rainfall, but what makes a flash flood dangerous is that it can often travel long distances to locations where no rain is apparent. It typically occurs where the ground isn’t able to absorb all the rainfall either due to previous precipitation, a recent wildfire stripping the land of vegetation, and even the hard surfaces of asphalt and concrete in cities. Flash floods can also occur due to dam or levee breaks, sending…
If you spend much time around anglers, you’ll notice one thing fast: We love gear almost as much as we love fishing. Nowhere is that more obvious than at ICAST, the place where shiny new toys and serious innovations collide. One of the highlights of any show is the “on the water” day. That means casting rods and messing around in kayaks in the ponds outside the convention center. I poked around for a bit, but was quickly drawn to the buzz around kayak trolling motors. Two were available for test drives: the Garmin Force Current, which had already received…
Most of us have probably accidentally left something behind on a vacation at one point or another, but I never really thought that a firearm would be so easily forgotten. Police in Gulf Shores, Alabama, though, say they’ve had 40 guns turned in over the past couple of months that were discovered in rental properties and hotel rooms. Now they’re reminding the public to make sure they’re packing up their pistols at the end of their stay. “On one occasion, we recovered three in one day and so we finally hit that point where we were…

Chief Master Sgt. John F. Bentivegna, whose 30-year career started in the Air Force and led to him becoming a key player in the Space Force, will be taking over as that service’s top enlisted leader. Bentivegna revealed the news, making him only the second chief master sergeant of the Space Force in the service’s history, in a Saturday interview with Military.com. He was selected from five finalists for the job. “The reason I’m doing this, and I talked to Gen. Saltzman, is because I think I have an opportunity to still serve,” Bentivegna said, referring to Chief of Space…
Refugees who fled Afghanistan during the chaotic final days of America’s longest war are getting a temporary reprieve from an immigration deadline set to hit later this year. The announcement comes as the congressional investigation into the withdrawal takes a contentious turn over producing documents. Late last week, the Biden administration confirmed it will allow Afghans evacuated during the withdrawal to apply to extend their temporary immigration status when it expires this summer as negotiations in Congress over providing evacuees permanent residency remain at an impasse. Meanwhile, on Monday, the House chairman investigating the withdrawal threatened to hold Secretary of…

Why? We’ve seen way too many mass shootings this year–though, in fairness, even one is too many. The latest in Allen, Texas will be occupying a lot of time in the coming days and weeks. Over the first four months and six days of this year, 115 people have died in 22 mass killings — an average of one mass killing a week. That includes the bloodshed Saturday…
