The court decision that opened up short-barreled long guns to be bought by some without having to jump through the NFA paperwork rigmarole isn’t a big deal. For the decision to apply, you have to be a member of a handful of groups or an organization affiliated with one of those groups. It’s not something everyone is just going to do.
But for the leftists at The New Republic, the Trump administration’s decision to not continue fighting to defend the NFA in this context is the most horrible thing ever, because it makes “gangster guns” so much easier for people to get.
For all his belaboring of the supposed national rise in crime, Donald Trump is the reason why “gangster weapons” will proliferate on the streets.
Yeah, ain’t it cool?
Oh, and by the way, you might want to stop calling them “gangster guns.” It makes them sound way cooler than they need to be. They’re already pretty awesome as it is.
Moreover, it’s not going to change anything, but I’ll get to that in a sec.
The president reportedly ordered the Justice Department not to appeal an August court ruling that effectively allowed Americans to buy, sell, and own short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and silencers.
No, it didn’t. See above.
At the time, U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix—a Trump appointee in the Northern District of Texas—ruled that most firearm restrictions enacted in the wake of the 1934 National Firearms Act were unconstitutional.
Several insiders that spoke with CBS News Thursday said that Trump himself directed the DOJ not to get involved in the matter. Trump also reportedly promised some Republican lawmakers that he would not allow the agency to undermine the ruling.
“Letting the lower court ruling stand runs counter to the recommendations of some career and politically appointed lawyers at the Justice Department across multiple offices who disagree with the court’s opinion, several of the sources said, adding that they have warned it is already beginning to adversely impact federal firearms prosecutions across the country,” CBS reported.
Yeah, it was a good week.
Look, the truth of the matter is that the knobs at The New Republic will never support anything but total gun control. They won’t come outright and say it, but they’ll support every additional burden that comes as if it’s only logical, even if it’s not.
For example, let’s consider short-barreled long guns for a moment. Anyone with a hacksaw can turn a shotgun into a short-barreled shotgun. It’s why they’re called “sawed-off shotguns,” for crying out loud.
The AR-15 and similar firearms are modular. With AR-style pistols existing, anyone can take a pistol upper and drop it onto a rifle lower and have an SBR of their very own.
The “gangsters” have never had a problem doing either of these.
Yet they still prefer handguns for their violent acts. Strange.
Anyway, the truth of the matter is that these laws went down because they were unconstitutional. They should never have been passed because of that, to, but also because they’re remarkably stupid. The NFA didn’t stop gangland violence during Prohibition. Ending Prohibition ended that gangland violence.
And with crime dropping post-Bruen, we also know that the hysteria of “blood in the streets” and its many variations should be a non-issue because those who take them seriously should ride short buses everywhere they go.
