First-person shooters have always been exciting, but class systems made them way more exciting. In FPS without classes, things basically came down to a player’s aim, speed, and map knowledge. Class-based games added another layer. The choice made before a match could shape how a whole team played once the action started.

Class-based systems gave the genre much more personality. One class could protect the front line, and another could heal wounded allies. Someone else could scout ahead, reveal enemy positions, or build defenses that changed how a map was fought over. Every role brought a different job, and every job mattered when the pressure started rising.

Marathon

  • Team-based extraction shooter where squads enter dangerous zones, gather loot, and try to escape alive.
  • Built around Runner classes that give each squad different strengths in combat, survival, and information gathering.

Marathon uses Runner Shells instead of traditional classes. Destroyer is probably the most balanced class in the game. This class is built to apply pressure, disrupt enemies, and control aggressive engagements. When a squad wants to force opponents out of cover or push into contested ground, Destroyer becomes very useful. It offers more frontline presence than the information-heavy or support-heavy options. The Destroyer’s playstyle is quite similar in solo or team play. He’s not the overall best at any single thing, be it combat or survival, but balances everything in a way that other classes struggle.

When it comes to squad play in Marathon, Triage is one of the most valuable support classes. This Runner Shell is built around healing, recovery, and helping teammates stay alive during difficult fights. In extraction shooters, surviving a fight often matters more than simply getting a kill. A class that can restore health, keep pressure off teammates, and help a squad recover after a bad engagement becomes extremely useful. Other classes in Marathon include Assassin, Vandal, Thief, and Recon.

Team Fortress 2

Nine Unique Classes

Team Fortress 2 is Getting a New Update

  • Team-based shooter where players pick from nine unique classes.
  • Focuses on objective modes like capture the flag, payload escort, and control points.

Team Fortress 2 is one of the best examples of how a class-based FPS should work. It’s all about teamwork and role balance in this FPS. Each of the nine classes, from the fast Scout to the defensive Engineer, has strengths, weaknesses, and a clear purpose on the battlefield. That structure forces players to think beyond just aiming skills.

No class can do everything, and that forces players to rely on each other. For instance, a lone Heavy is dangerous, but without a Medic, that strength fades fast. In the same way, an Engineer can lock down an area with sentry guns, yet becomes exposed without team protection.

Killing Floor 2

10 Perk Classes

killing floor 2 (3)

  • Co-op survival shooter where squads fight waves of bio-engineered monsters called Zeds.
  • Uses a perk system that gives each player a clear combat role.

Killing Floor 2 builds its class system around Perks. Tripwire designed the game so that teams become stronger when different perks work together. The Berserker is my favorite class in Killing Floor 2 because they fight up close. This perk uses melee weapons, takes reduced damage, and can stay alive in dangerous positions longer than most other classes. A Berserker often holds the front line, keeping enemies busy while teammates attack from safer positions. The Commando focuses on assault rifles and battlefield awareness. One of the class’s most useful jobs is spotting hidden enemies and controlling medium-range fights.

The Support class uses shotguns for crowd control. Support players are especially good when enemies push into narrow spaces. Their heavy close-range damage makes them reliable defenders. They also carry extra ammunition for teammates, which becomes very important during longer matches. The Sharpshooter is all about precision. This class is about targeting big Zeds. Large enemies can become dangerous very quickly, so having a player built for controlled, high-damage shots matters a lot. There are about 10 classes in Killing Floor 2, and each of them brings something pretty useful to the table.

Apex Legends

Five Classes

Apex Legends Akimbo Pistols First Person POV

  • Squad-based battle royale focused on teamwork and abilities.
  • Legends are divided into different classes, including Assault, Recon, and Controller.

Apex Legends organizes its Legends or characters into classes like Assault, Skirmisher, Recon, Controller, and Support. Each class provides both abilities and passive perks that affect gameplay. Assault Legends are built for combat. They carry extra ammo and push fights aggressively. Skirmishers focus on mobility, using abilities to reposition quickly and escape danger.

Recon Legends basically gather information. They scan the map or reveal enemy positions, helping the team plan ahead. For controllers, their job is to lock down areas with traps and defensive tools, making it harder for enemies to push. And then Support Legends keep the squad alive. They provide healing, revive, or utility that extends survival in long matches.

Overwatch 2

Three Classes

  • A team-based hero shooter built around abilities, roles, and fast-paced objective play.
  • Focuses on synergy between heroes grouped into Tank, Damage, and Support roles.

Overwatch 2 keeps things clear by grouping all heroes into three main classes: Tank, Damage, and Support. These roles guide how each player helps the team. The Tank class leads the fight. Tanks have high health and tools that protect teammates. Heroes like Reinhardt use shields to block damage, while others like Winston jump into fights to distract enemies. Tanks create space, which means they make it safer for the rest of the team to move and attack. Without a strong Tank, teams often struggle to push forward or hold positions.

The Damage class is all about dealing damage and getting eliminations. These heroes come in many styles. Some are simple and rely on steady shooting, while others use speed or tricky abilities to outplay enemies. And finally, the Support class keeps everyone going. These heroes heal teammates and provide helpful effects.
