Texas has long had a reputation as being one of the most pro-gun states in the country, but it was largely overblown up until recently. Before they passed constitutional carry, carry permits required training, for one thing, which is more infringement than many other states had.

But that was then, this is now.

Now, it just about lives up to that reputation, and in the wake of the…um…discussion about whether you can bring a gun to a protest or not, the governor there makes it very clear what he thinks, and it’s a very good thing to hear.

Gov. Greg Abbott stood his ground Thursday in support of Texans’ constitutional right to carry guns to protests, countering fellow Republicans who say demonstrators can’t – or at least shouldn’t – have weapons at those events.

“Our law is that you get to open carry, and there are protests and other activities that occur all the time when people are carrying guns and doing so lawfully,” Abbott said at a Garland campaign event, moments after gaining endorsements by the National Rifle Association, the Texas Rifle Association and other groups.

The remarks by Abbott, who is running for reelection, come amid a national debate over public safety and constitutional liberties at protests, stemming from the fatal shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

Thursday, flanked by gun-rights groups, game wardens and other Second Amendment supporters at Garland gun range, Abbott said he has signed “about 30 laws” upholding the right of “every Texan … to be able to possess a gun. Period.”

Texas gun owners can be trusted to carry responsibly, Abbott said.

“They know full well, a gun carrier does, that if they pull a gun and aim it at somebody, that other person has the right of self defense,” he said.

Yep.

Now, Abbott doesn’t seem to be implying that Pretti did any such thing as point a gun at federal agents, because it’s pretty clear he didn’t, but that was just a blanket statement about things in general.

People can carry guns to protests in most states, though the anti-gunners who have suddenly discovered the right to keep and bear arms are trying to change that throughout the country.

This isn’t really about Pretti. That fiasco will go under the microscope, and we’ll hopefully find out what precisely happened.

What this is really about is those out there who are acting like the mere fact that he was carrying a gun meant he ultimately deserved what happened, and are saying so despite normally talking actual sense when it comes to guns. They’re so deep in the Team Red hole that they don’t even realize why it’s dark.

The anti-gun morons who are screaming about the Second Amendment are worse, mind you, at least in my mind, so don’t come at me for thinking less of the Republicans who should know better.

People have the right to keep and bear arms. In states like Minnesota, there aren’t any laws preventing them from doing it on that level, either. Abbott is just making it clear here and now that it’s perfectly legal to carry a gun at a protest in the Lone Star State.

So, God forbid something like this happens there, at least everyone will know what the law says upfront.
