Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has spoken on Red Dead Online, giving the multiplayer game considerable praise despite its major updates ending in 2021. Though some might have expected that Take-Two considered Red Dead Online to be a failure given its lack of attention in recent years, it seems that’s far from the case.
Back in 2022, after the game had gone without major updates for a year, Red Dead Online players hosted a funeral for the title. While there have been some glimpses of hope over the years that more significant updates would arrive, especially after the Strange Tales of the West update, the game largely remains in limbo.
Red Dead Online Praised by Take-Two Interactive Head
Now, when speaking with IGN, Take-Two Interactive SEO Zelnick praised the Red Dead series as a whole, as well as Red Dead Online. During the chat, Zelnick was asked if he considered Red Dead Online to be a missed opportunity, pointing to the disparity between GTA Online and Red Dead Online in terms of popularity, sales, and ongoing support. Zelnick responded that “There is literally nothing about Red Dead selling 85 million units that could signal a missed opportunity. And Red Dead Online has been immensely successful and long lasting.”
He added some of his personal feelings about Red Dead, explaining that the team is very proud of the game, and that he personally finds the game to be “just amazing” and that he loves engaging with it. He also gave a nod to the game’s visuals and gameplay, saying that it still feels “very up to date” even though Red Dead Redemption 2 is nearly 8 years old. While it’s clear that he has an appreciation for the game and its franchise, these comments may just feel like salt in the wound for fans, as many feel that focus was taken away from Red Dead Online too soon in order to better focus on Grand Theft Auto Online.
