On the SHOT Show floor, Streamlight debuted the ProTac Rail Mount VIR Pro, a multi-fuel weapon light designed for long guns that combines white light and infrared output in a single housing. The unit supports both rechargeable SL-B26 batteries and CR123A cells, giving users flexibility depending on mission or logistics.

A Dual-Spectrum Streamlight VIR Weapon Light for Long Guns

The VIR Pro delivers three white-light output levels. High mode produces 1,100 lumens, medium outputs 450 lumens, and low drops to 120 lumens. Candela ratings scale accordingly, with 40,000 candela on high, 19,000 on medium, and 4,200 on low.

Runtime varies by power source. Using the rechargeable battery, the light runs about two hours on high. With CR123A batteries, high output runtime drops to roughly 1.5 hours.

Infrared Output and Beam Characteristics

In infrared mode, the Rail Mount VIR Pro offers two output settings. High IR output measures 2,300mW, while low output is rated at 600mW. I asked one of the streamlight engineers if there is an IR equivalent to measure candela, and unfortunately, there is not. According to him, standard candela measurement relies on lux meters, which do not register infrared light.

But I was informed that the IR beam is a good balance between focus and flood. The VIR Pro uses twin TIR lenses rather than exposing a raw LED. TIR, or Total Internal Reflection, lenses focus and shape the beam instead of dispersing light indiscriminately. Streamlight described the IR beam as a balanced compromise, providing broad coverage and good throw.

Waterproof Rating and Construction

The Streamlight Rail Mount VIR Pro Weapon Light carries an IPX7 waterproof rating. The adjustable head, which allows users to set the light at different angles using a set screw, does not compromise water resistance.

Internally, the light uses multiple O-rings to maintain sealing. The dual-mode switch that toggles between white and IR adds complexity, but the engineer said the design does hold up to the water exposure tests.

For a likely price of around $230, this may be a good option compared to the existing, more expensive IR illuminator options. For information, be sure to check out Streamlight’s website for a full list of technical specs and features.
