Ah, Toronto, Canada. A city that’s doing more for the cause of gun rights than probably any other community on the planet, and not because they’ve embraced it and shown the world that law-abiding gun owners aren’t the problem, but the answer. Oh no, because Canada has done the exact opposite, and Toronto has become a horrific place to hang out.
In fact, Canada–one of the places we’re told we should emulate when it comes to gun laws–is more dangerous than most of the United States.
And this past weekend was not exactly a compelling refutation of that statement, either.
Advocates are speaking out against gun violence after a troubling weekend of shootings in Toronto.
Just hours after a shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair festival left two people dead, Toronto police say shots were fired in the area of Polson Pier early Sunday morning.
In a post to social media, the Toronto Police Service said officers were called to the area of Polson Street and Cherry Street shortly before 3:30 a.m.
Later, in a news release, Toronto police said there was an exchange of gunfire between two people. After the shooting, one of the two people allegedly stole a vehicle from a rideshare driver with customers on board.
Toronto police say the individual struck pedestrians and cars while fleeing the scene.
…
According to Toronto police data, there have been six firearm discharges this July. In 2025, that number was two.
This is actually on par with a lot of what we’ve seen come out of the city this year. It’s a lot worse than it has been in the past, even while we’re seeing record lows.
One of the “advocates” they spoke to was someone talking about how bad the economy is and how that’s clearly part of what’s going on here, that somehow you need to deal with economic factors and suddenly, the crime will stop.
Economics might play a role, and our economy has been outpacing Canada’s for a while, so we can’t dismiss it entirely, but I’m not sure it’s the totality of things in the Great White North.
But the “advocate” I most want to talk about is this one:
Despite this, Wendy Cukier, of the Coalition for Gun Control, says one violent weekend shouldn’t spark panic.
“Every shooting is concerning, of course, and every shooting makes us feel less secure. But I think you have to look at the overall picture,” she said. “If we look specifically at firearm incidents, they have gone up but firearm homicides have actually leveled out.”
“It’s really important not to overreact to a weekend of violence,” she said.
Maybe it’s me, but gun control advocates didn’t blink in calling for bans on so-called assault weapons following the Nova Scotia shooting in 2020. They didn’t blink after last month’s shooting in Montreal before calling for the SKS to be banned. Why is it not something to panic about when gun control clearly is failing, but it’s totally appropriate to panic when a black swan event happens?
And why does the gun control crowd on either side of the border have a tendency to try to manipulate the data to make the case that things are the way they’ve claimed? Gun control is ascendent in Canada, so Cukier is saying that you shouldn’t worry about more and more people being shot at, but only because the shooters are missing, while our own domestic versions are screaming that everything is terrible, even as the rates drop.
The problem is that Toronto is in the midst of a trend that should worry people there, and it comes after all of the gun control that’s been passed in the last handful of years. Why, it’s almost like gun control might just be the reason for this, versus some kind of solution.
Look, the other guy who was saying it was the economy? At least following his line of thinking creates a positive impact for most people, even if it doesn’t do a thing to violent crime. Following the gun control crowd creates an impact that leaves innocent people dead because they can’t protect themselves or the people they love.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
