SHOT Show 2026 brought a first look at Palmetto State Armory’s AXR SSP (Short Stroke Piston) series. PSA reps report that the AXR SSP platform is being developed based on user feedback from the Jackal 2.0.

Shooters liked the Jackal but wanted changes that could not be achieved while retaining compatibility with standard AR lowers, as the Jackal had done. PSA responded by moving in a new direction rather than further revising the Jackal.

Short-Stroke Piston and Barrel

A monolithic top Picatinny rail runs the full length of the upper. PSA designed it to prevent flex and maintain consistent optic mounting. This more rigid top rail is perfect for users who plan on using an IR laser because it will help their LAM retain zero.

The AXR SSP uses a barrel nut system similar to an AR-15. That design allows users to swap barrels more easily.  PSA paired that with handguards in different lengths, matched to each barrel configuration. These handguards interface with the monolithic top rail and include openings to access the adjustable gas block.

Proprietary Lower and Mounting Options

This platform does not use a standard mil-spec lower. They diverted from the standard lower for multiple reasons, mostly regarding incompatible internal dimension requirements. But another reason is that they wanted to improve the interface between the receiver and the folding stock or brace.

There will also be options to buy the gun without a stock. In that case, it would come with a 1913 rail section so you can mount whatever stock or brace you prefer. This option allows the AXR to still be somewhat flexible despite being mostly proprietary. But, as far as braces go, this folding brace seems to fit both form and function well.

E4 Bolt System

Inside the AXR SSP is PSA’s E4 bolt system. It uses increased lug diameter, a larger bolt body, dual ejectors, and radiused rear lugs. PSA also plans to offer the platform with Magpul ICAR-compatible lowers for future 6 ARC variants.

Planned calibers include .300 Blackout and 5.56 NATO at launch. PSA also wants to offer 6 ARC and .338 ARC variants. If the platform performs well, PSA may expand into .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor.

Barrel Lengths and Timeline

PSA listed several barrel options. Current prototypes include a 6.75-inch .300 Blackout and a 14.5-inch 5.56. Additional 5.56 options may include 10.3, 12.5, and 16-inch offerings, along with multiple other .300 Blackout lengths. All barrels are cold hammer forged and chrome lined.

Pricing has not been announced. PSA emphasized that these are early prototypes. The company hopes to release the AXR SSP by the end of 2026, with Q4 as a target if development stays on track.

Be sure to keep an eye on the Palmetto State Armory website for more details around that time.
