When a new president comes into office, it’s not unusual for him and his allies in Congress to try and undo some of the things the other party has done in the past. Sometimes, that’s exactly what they were elected to do, and other times it’s just things they want to accomplish while they’re there.
For President Donald Trump, the possibility that he’d repeal things like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was just one reason I voted for him. I also hoped we’d get a lot more with regard to gun rights.
And we already have.
For some, though, that’s just too awful to contemplate, and columnist Jonathan Salant is willing to lie about it.
Less than three weeks after taking the oath of office as the nation’s 47th president, Trump issued an order defending gun rights, ordered a review of Biden administration actions to regulate guns, and rolled back some of the regulations on the books.
Rollbacks
He revoked a rule requiring background checks for gun owners buying devices that can convert pistols into short-barreled rifles; proposed cutting almost 1,500 positions at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; removed the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2024 declaration that gun violence was a public health crisis; and shut down the website of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
And ATF dropped its “zero-tolerance policy” against firearms dealers who didn’t follow federal law requiring the to keep records of gun sales and conduct background checks of all purchasers.
“if gun sellers don’t abide by those requirements, they’re supposed to lose their licenses,” said Lindsay Nichols, policy director at the Giffords Law Center. “Now Trump walks that back and even invites gun sellers who lost their licenses because they violated the law to be relicensed and reopen their businesses.”
The White House said that some licenses had been revoked for paperwork errors, not wrongdoing.
In addition, the Trump tax bill remove taxes on firearm silencers and short-barrel rifles in their massive tax bill.
First, those devices turn pistols into…better pistols. Yes, arm braces can be held up to the shoulder and all that, but they’re designed to help people get better stability while shooting one of those pistols one-handed, which is a tremendous benefit to wounded veterans and other amputees.
And those who wanted to make a short-barreled rifle with an AR-pistol have always been able to do that, regardless of the laws that prohibit them from doing so. They’d just throw on a regular stock rather than a pistol brace if they wanted to. Literally nothing has changed.
Pretending otherwise is an outright lie.
The same with trying to frame the end of the ATF’s zero-tolerance policy as anything other than exactly what the White House claimed it was. We know definitively that many who lost their licenses or who were faced with that were in that position because of minor things like a miscalculation on what constituted a 3-day waiting period, abbreviating county names, and other minor discrepancies that, in previous times, would have been corrected, and all would be well.
Those who are actually breaking the law, though, can still lose their licenses and go to prison. Note how that didn’t make it into the discussion?
Of course, the taxes on suppressors and SBRs are gone, so he got that part right, but notice how he forgets to mention that every other part of the NFA process is still there? All that’s gone is a $200 tax that had to be paid on top of the purchase of the suppressor or rifle itself. Every other step remains, despite our best efforts.
And this is a lie of omission, because he wants people angry and scared, all without cause.
This is why I can’t stand the other side in this debate. They claim to be the moral ones, but look at how often they outright lie about things to try and manipulate people so they can get their way.
There’s nothing moral about that.
