Reports out of New York indicate a significant surge in gun ownership and firearms training among Jewish New Yorkers as Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani prepares to take office.

The New York Post has described Mamdani as a “Muslim radical socialist,” and concerns over rising anti-Semitic rhetoric and violence have triggered a wave of preparation across the city’s Jewish community.

According to The Times of Israel, Jewish gun owners, instructors, and security professionals in the city are seeing heavy demand for concealed carry permits and firearms training.

The trend reflects growing unease about the kind of social climate Mamdani’s administration may bring, especially as hate incidents have increased nationwide.

Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO) noted that this reaction is unsurprising. Faced with a potential threat, Jewish residents are turning toward the rights protected by the 2A as a preventative measure.

Historically, New York City’s Jewish population has not strongly supported gun ownership. Even though many major pro-gun voices in America are of Jewish heritage, but that pattern is shifting rapidly.

JPFO views the change not as hypocrisy, but as a rise in common sense.

A separate report from the New York Post detailed the Democratic Socialists of America’s expectations for Mamdani and highlighted their anti-Israel platform, another factor pushing New York’s Jewish residents toward firearms for personal protection.

The Times of Israel further reported that more than 1,000 rabbis and cantors nationwide signed a letter opposing Mamdani and the normalization of anti-Zionism.

New York Police licensing data shows a clear response: a 14-percent spike in concealed carry permit applications after Mamdani secured the Democratic primary.

Firearms instructors told The Times of Israel that interest spans every corner of the community: doctors, lawyers, plumbers, and even rabbis are signing up for training. Nothing illustrates the level of concern more clearly than this rapid uptick in both applications and training enrollment.

JPFO concluded that New York’s Jewish population is signaling its resolve. According to the organization, the city’s Jews “will not flee, will not be disenfranchised and will not back down.”
