Since we’re now at a point in time where everything is considered a mass shooting, then I guess that’s what happened in Tucson early Sunday morning. Nine people were shot, none killed, in an incident that the media has reported as a mass shooting.
And don’t get me wrong, it’s awful enough as it is. I’m glad no one was killed, and I only wish it hadn’t happened. No one wants to see these things, except maybe the anti-gunners who seem to see them as a handy tool with which they can advance their gun control agenda.
Luckily, the suspect was shot and arrested, which means he’s not still running around.
Unfortunately, we know nothing at all about him, which is troubling since the mayor immediately went exactly where you think she went.
[Mayor Regina] Romero said she’s hopeful the victims will recover quickly after the suspect “recklessly began shooting in a crowded area.”
She also placed some blame for the shooting on Arizona’s “weak gun safety laws, calling for universal background checks with gun sales, funds for violence prevention programs and extreme risk policies that would remove firearms from those who pose a danger to themselves or others.
“The impact resulting from this act of gun violence reaches beyond the scene and the victims. It affects all of us: family and friends, first responders, the witnesses and our entire community,” she wrote in a statement posted to social media. “We know these moments leave a lasting impression on us and our sense of safety.”
The problem here is that we don’t know what Romero knows or doesn’t know, in part because nothing has been made public. If the police know something and Romero is aware of it while making these statements, it’s kind of difficult to refute them other than in the most generic sense. If they don’t know anything at all about this guy, and she’s just spouting off, we still can’t really respond with effect.
And that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?
If it turns out to be some career criminal who was trying to settle a score with someone at the pizza shop where this happened, all gun control arguments go out the window since he couldn’t lawfully purchase a firearm in the first place.
On the other hand, if this is some guy who was fine right up until Sunday morning, we still don’t know.
What Romero has done is thrown out a grab-bag of policy proposals that all supposedly target different things. It means that regardless of what she knows or doesn’t know, she’s using this as an opportunity to advance an agenda, and because she’s so self-righteous about it, she likely doesn’t even think she’s politicizing the incident.
That’s the truly disgusting part.
I’m sorry this happened, and I hope all the victims make a full recovery. I don’t actually care if the shooter lives or dies, but if he survives, may he rot in prison for the rest of his days. If he has a particularly unpleasant prison experience, so much the better. He deserves it.
