SIG SAUER announced this week that new parts and accessories for the M17 (full-size) and M18 (compact) pistols have been approved for use under the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) program.
The authorization lets soldiers procure approved items through existing military supply channels, simplifying logistics for units that want to reconfigure fielded pistols.
The modular nature of the P320’s fire control unit (FCU) is central to the update. Because the FCU is the serialized core of the pistol, components around it can be changed without replacing the FCU itself.
SIG and the Army collaborated on a Modular Handgun eXchange (MHX) accessories package that builds on that modularity.
The first output of that work is the MHS General Forces Configuration, or MHS-GFC. SIG says the configuration is intended to give soldiers a flexible baseline they can adapt to mission needs, with improvements aimed at accuracy, faster manipulation, reduced training time, and better system control across different environments.
Steve Rose, SIG SAUER executive vice president of the Defense Strategies Group, framed the approval as part of the company’s modular approach.
“The MHS-GFC and associated AAL items exemplify our dedication to modular design, empowering soldiers with tools to enhance effectiveness and efficiency on the battlefield,” Rose said.
Soldiers can swap approved components at the user level to convert existing M17 and M18 pistols. Items called out in SIG’s announcement include a grip module, flared magazine well, gas-pedal take-down lever, slide-mounted or stand-alone RM17 pistol red dot sight (PRDS), specialty barrels, and other accessories.
SIG says the MHS-GFC is the initial configuration in a series of modular updates planned for the MHS family.
For units already fielding the M17/M18, the approval should make it easier to tailor pistols to specific roles such as range, convoy, or close-quarters duties.
The parts list includes both ergonomic changes, like grip and mag-well geometry, and performance items, like pistol-red-dot-sight mounting and special barrels that support varied mission profiles.
