There’s nothing quite like that first successful hunt — and Montana’s keeping the tradition alive.

Gov. Greg Gianforte just kicked off the Fourth Annual Montana Youth Hunting Story Contest, giving young hunters a chance to share their stories and win some incredible prizes.

The winners from a few years ago.

Open to hunters and apprentices ages 10 to 17, the contest celebrates the next generation of Montana outdoorsmen and women. Whether it’s a big bull elk, a first pheasant, or just a good story from the field, this is their shot to shine.

Ten winners will be chosen — five from ages 10–13 and five from 14–17 — and each will get to visit the state Capitol to swap stories and pick up gear from some of the best names in the hunting world.

This year’s prize partners include Sitka, Stone Glacier, Kenetrek Boots, J2 Taxidermy, Murdoch’s, the Montana Outfitters & Guides Association, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

The 2025 contest opens September 8 and closes December 2 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Stories must be 500 words or fewer and include a photo from the hunt. Eligible entries can feature any legal Montana game animal, furbearer, or bird — all that matters is the story.

So, Montana kids: grab your tags, get outside, and start making memories. Come winter, you just might be standing in the Capitol telling your story to the governor himself.
