Massachusetts is one of the most anti-gun states in the nation, which is ironic since the American Revolution kicked off there over the British trying to confiscate guns.
Still, that’s the way it is today, and the rolling status of their deceased ancestors is what it is.
Up that way, we’ve been spending a lot of our time focusing on Brown University in neighboring Rhode Island, and for good reason. However, the shooting death of an MIT professor about 50 miles from Brown has a lot of people raising an eyebrow or two.
Authorities said on Dec. 16 that they launched a homicide investigation after a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was fatally shot at his home.
Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old theoretical physicist and fusion scientist from Portugal, was found with “apparent gunshot wounds” at his house in Brookline, Massachusetts, on the night of Dec. 15, according to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office. He was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced dead on Dec. 16.
Massachusetts State Police and the Brookline Police Department responded to the scene after receiving a report of a man shot at his home on Gibbs Street, the district attorney’s office said in a statement. Brookline is a wealthy suburb of Boston.
Brookline Police Chief Jennifer Paster stated that the investigation is active and ongoing, adding that patrol vehicles, officers, and unmarked units remained at the scene. No suspects had been taken into custody as of Dec. 16.
“On behalf of the Brookline Police Department, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Nuno F.G. Loureiro during this incredibly difficult time,” Paster said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragic loss.”
The homicide investigation comes as authorities in Providence, Rhode Island, about 50 miles southwest of Brookline, continued their search for the suspect in the Brown University shooting. Two students were killed, and nine others were injured on Dec. 13 when a gunman opened fire on campus.
Now, the FBI says there’s no connection between the two shootings, which would be fine if the officials in the Brown shooting weren’t so damned tight-lipped about things.
Right now, as of this writing, we know very little about what transpired on that campus other than a shooting that resulted in the death of two people and left nine others injured. That’s about it.
There’s been no description of a suspect, no description of what the killer said when he or she entered the room, nothing. There’s damn near radio silence on the topic, which means a lot of people are wondering why. That leaves many of those same people to try and draw conclusions for themselves, because we’re humans and we tend not to like unanswered questions.
With two high-profile shootings involving prestigious universities in such close proximity to one another, neither of which has a suspect identified to the public, you’re going to get some conspiracy theories.
And the fact that, since 2020 at least, it’s been hard to refute the claim that the difference between “conspiracy theory” and “fact” is about six weeks, the lack of transparency isn’t helping.
As it is, Loureiro’s murder is bad enough. It’s a shooting death in a heavily gun-controlled state. There’s enough discussion to be had all on its own.
But because officials in the Brown shooting aren’t saying much, it’s causing a lot of confusion among some in the public about this incident.
Sure, the FBI said there’s no relationship between the two, and it’s not like the FBI would lie about something. Oh, wait…
Officials don’t have to tell the public everything. Keeping something back could make sense in a lot of cases. But telling the public so little just muddies the water across the board.
