When you find yourself debating an anti-gunner over the subject, many will claim that self-defense isn’t a good reason to have a gun because you can just call the police. They don’t seem to care how long it’ll take for the police to arrive or anything; they just tout that as the reason you don’t need at least some of the guns most of us own.
A lot of those people also seem to like New York City mayoral candidate Zachary Mamdani.
However, let’s understand something here. Mamdani’s position on both guns and police doesn’t show us a safer world. It shows us a world where people are going to be terrified.
During the press conference, Mamdani attempted to soften the impact of his past messages, but without condemning them outright. He said his 2020 posts—including one that mocked a crying officer and another that openly called for cutting funding to the NYPD—were made “amidst a frustration that many New Yorkers held at the murder of George Floyd” and are “clearly out of step” with his current views. However, he avoided retracting or apologizing for them.
“I am not defunding the police; I am not running to defund the police,” he declared. However, he reiterated that he considers adjusting the way authorities respond to an emergency.
“There is a need to ensure that every act we take is one that is actually delivering public safety. And what we see right now, especially with regard to how we respond to protest, is not in line with that,” he said.
Gun control yes, crime control no
Like other Democrats, Mamdani blamed the attack on easy access to guns and repeated the call for a federal ban on assault rifles, aligning himself with Governor Kathy Hochul. However, he avoided presenting concrete proposals on how he would bolster security in New York beyond restricting weaponry.
In other words, Mamdani won’t retract those views, which tells me that they’re not that out of step with what he thinks. It’s not that hard to say that those views were wrong. He won’t.
And his idea of “adjusting” how the police respond to emergencies is completely in line with how the Defund the Police movement claimed they wanted to defund the departments.
Meanwhile, he’s also touting more gun control, which means New Yorkers would have an even harder time defending themselves than they already do.
So let me paint you a picture, for a moment, of what things would look like under Mamdani if he got his way.
A single woman is sitting at home, her three kids are playing in the other room, when someone starts hammering on the door, calling her name out with a drunken slur. It’s her abusive ex-husband, a man who turned violent when he drank. She’s got a restraining order against him, but that clearly didn’t work.
She picks up the phone and dials 9-1-1.
The dispatcher takes the report and informs her that a social worker will be responding shortly, and if that doesn’t defuse the situation, an officer will be along shortly. Of course, the NYPD is grossly undermanned after legions of officers quit following Mamdani’s election, but not to worry.
She tried to get a gun, but the process was taking so long that she couldn’t. A few years earlier, it wasn’t so bad, even in New York, but now? Now it’s a nightmare, and another nightmare is trying to get in.
A short time later, the social worker gets there. The woman hears the voices through the door. Her ex is loud, but the social worker speaks in a soothing voice, even as the ex’s gets louder and louder.
Then, all of a sudden, there’s a scream. It sounds like the social worker. She’s screaming at the top of her lungs.
The woman calls 9-1-1 again. The dispatcher informs her that a police officer has been notified, but it’ll take time.
She doesn’t have it. The ex begins kicking in the door. Soon, he gains entrance into the apartment.
I don’t need to spell out what happens next, do I?
Maybe Mamdani doesn’t want that. Maybe he really does want the police to be the ones who respond to a situation like this, or many other situations, but what about those that don’t look like they’ll be violent until they are? How many innocent people will die because of Mamdani’s inane attitude toward police and guns?
Editor’s Note: Zohran Mamdani is an avowed Democratic Socialist and has a real chance to become the next mayor of New York City.
