Things aren’t great in the Old Dominion State. My old stomping grounds haven’t just swung back toward embracing gun control. They’ve got full-on California with the things that supposedly moderate Gov. Abigail Spanberger has supported regarding infringing on gun rights.
Honestly, there’s nothing good that seems to be coming out of there other than Cam’s dispatches from behind what have become enemy lines.
But not everyone is rolling over and showing their belly. The Second Amendment sanctuary movement in Virginia is still alive and kicking, apparently.
On Friday, Lynchburg voted to renew its Second Amendment sanctuary status.
Originally passed in response to potential federal gun control, Lynchburg was one of many communities throughout the nation that stated its desire to refuse to enforce any unconstitutional gun control laws.
While it was never really put to the test, the lines were drawn.
Ironically, it was modeled after immigration sanctuary communities that had long been permitted to ignore federal immigration law. Of course, now they have legions of ICE agents swarming these same communities, but that’s kind of what you’d expect.
The difference here is that the Second Amendment protects gun rights, while the Constitution also gives the federal government authority over immigration. In other words, immigration sanctuaries are unconstitutional, just like gun control.
At least, that’s my take on the matter.
In reality, about all that will happen is that Lynchburg police will be prohibited from enforcing gun control laws, but state police will be obliged to step in and handle them when they’re aware of the potential charges. People won’t get away with bragging about how they’re not following state law, unlike with immigration, in part because a state is much smaller than an entire nation. Couple that with anti-gun lawmakers having firm control over the state, and what you end up with is a recipe for someone to do something vile.
Yet the sanctuary status of a place like Lynchburg matters. If nothing else, it’s a reminder to Richmond that, despite their recent shenanigans, not everyone is interested in just allowing them to turn their state into the next California or Massachusetts.
Politics in the state is notorious for swinging back and forth. From red state to blue state to red state, then back to blue state, there’s little consistency we’ve seen out of Virginia. Sanctuary communities are a reminder that just like Democrats gained power this year, they can lose it just as easily in the next election, and when that happens, they might as well expect at least some of what they’re trying to be repealed.
That’s assuming any of us survives judicial challenge before then.
“[T]he right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” it says. Virginia, the state that set the basis for the Bill of Rights, is now pretending that those words don’t mean what they actually mean.
Lynchburg, among other communities, is sending a message to Richmond that they’re not buying the BS.
May others follow their lead and renew their support for the Second Amendment. I doubt anyone in Richmond will listen, but it’s still important to make sure they know.
Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
