“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

I ask you to take a look at each and every word there. I’m sure most of you know it by heart, so there’s no need, but for everyone else, take a moment and look at what words the Founding Fathers included, and perhaps more importantly, which ones they didn’t include.

Obviously, there are a billion words across multiple languages that they didn’t use, but one of those is anything related to hunting. Absolutely none of them are about any form of outdoor recreation.

While the “shall not be infringed” part absolutely covers hunting weapons as well as everything else, it’s pretty clear that the purpose of the Second Amendment isn’t about putting deer meat in the freezer.

Unfortunately, Sen. Amy Klobuchar doesn’t seem to understand that, even at this late date.

Opening her time on the microphone, Sen. Klobuchar set the scene for an attack on our right to keep and bear arms. Addressing AG Bondi, Klobuchar got to her point.

“In 2018, after the Parkland shooting, you were attorney general and there was a bill called the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, and the bill banned bump stocks and enacted red flag laws and raised the minimum age to purchase a firearm in Florida from 18 to 21, and you actually defended the law in court from a challenge from the NRA, and we know that I’m in favor of an assault weapon ban. Period,” she said.

“I look at these bills, and I think, ‘Does this hurt my Uncle Dick and the deer stand?’ – we have a proud tradition of hunting in Minnesota – I don’t think they do,” Sen. Klobuchar suggested.

Sen. Klobuchar has referenced her Uncle Dick numerous times when discussing her belief that modern sporting rifles (MSRs) can and should be banned.

Because she brought it up, though, NSSF views gun control bills through the lens and with the knowledge that our Founding Fathers didn’t add the Second Amendment to the Constitution in response to a rogue deer herd. They added it as a guarantee that law-abiding Americans had the constitutional right and means to keep and bear arms to keep a new government in check.

Bingo.

The Second Amendment is about the security of a free state. While the weapons used for hunting and protecting one’s country were pretty much identical at the time, there’s nothing to suggest that the goal of the Founding Fathers was about harvesting game.

It’s clear they wanted all guns protected, obviously, which would protect guns for hunting, but hunting isn’t some magical litmus test that must be protected to the exclusion of all other aspects of our Second Amendment rights.

Klobuchar has been around long enough that there’s no way she hasn’t been informed about this. She knows this. She might not believe it, but she knows better, and the fact that she’s still using this inane line of “reasoning” is troubling, to say the least.

Her Uncle Dick and his deer stand aren’t the test anyone should use to determine if their rights should be secure.

If we did that, we’d have to deal with those who would twist every other constitutionally protected right in a similar manner until they mean nothing.

After all, if hunting is the test, then all the government would need to allow us is archery equipment, including crossbows, which I’ve talked about before.

And again, Klobuchar knows this. She’s just bringing up good, old Uncle Dick to make it sound like she’s really reasonable about guns.

She’s not.

She knows better and still pushes this nonsense. She’s an enemy of the Second Amendment and she knows it.
