New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is pretty much the antithesis of anything anyone on the right believes. He’s an avowed socialist, an anti-Zionist, a Muslim who has expressed seriously antisemitic views, and wants to basically abolish prisons and the police.

For Jewish people living in the Big Apple, this is hardly a time of optimism for the future of their city, I’m sure.

Luckily, it seems that many of them have enough sense to recognize that if the city is against them and for criminals, they might better be ready to take their safety into their own hands.

From a press release from Jews for the Preservation of Firearm Ownership:

Published reports confirm that many Jewish New Yorkers have been arming themselves in worrisome anticipation of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani—described by the New York Post as a “Muslim radical socialist”—taking office and opening a floodgate of hatred toward the city’s Jewish population.

Even The Times of Israel is reporting how Jewish gun owners, firearms instructors and security professionals in the Big Apple are witnessing a major surge in demand for firearms training, and applications for concealed carry permits. Anti-Semitic rhetoric has led to increased violence against Jews across the United States.

The alarm is sounding, and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JFPO) is paying attention. JFPO says it is hardly surprising that, when faced with the kind of social threat facing them, New York City’s Jewish residents are falling back on the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment as a preventive measure.

Mamdani’s election represents a bizarre shift in American politics, and it is most alarming to New York City’s Jewish population which, ironically, has never historically provided strong support for the right to keep and bear arms, despite the fact that a significant number of leaders in the gun rights movement are of Jewish heritage. In addition, gun ownership is prevalent in Israel, especially since the October 7 attack. But in New York City, that scenario is changing. JFPO doesn’t view this as an exercise of hypocrisy, but rather a dramatic onset of common sense.

A separate New York Post report revealed the Democratic Socialists of America agenda they want Mamdani to follow, and it is pure anti-Israel, and thus New York Jews feel threatened. The Times of Israel noted how more than 1,000 rabbis and cantors from across the U.S. signed a letter opposing Mamdani and “the political normalization of anti-Zionism.” The same report revealed how New York Police licensing data shows a 14-percent increase in carry permit applications after Mamdani won the Democratic primary.

Nothing so clearly illustrates the degree of dread among New York’s Jewish population as the spike in concealed carry applications and interest in training courses, which one instructor in Brooklyn told the Times of Isreal “includes Jewish doctors, lawyers, plumbers and even rabbis.”

JPFO said all of this leads to an inescapable conclusion, that New York’s Jewish population will not flee, will not be disenfranchised and will not back down.

I sincerely hope JPFO is right about this being “a dramatic onset of common sense.” That would end up being good for the entire country in the long run, and we sorely need it.

I’ve always been a little confused about anti-gun Jews, since they endured the Holocaust at the hands of a tyrannical government in a nation that had already disarmed its people. The Warsaw Uprising, on the other hand, was a significant moment that had the potential to end the threat. Had it happened in Germany and far earlier, it might have saved millions of lives.

But, many seem to be getting the hint now, and they’re buying guns because nothing Mamdani vocally stands for sounds good for the Jewish community there, among millions of others.

After all, if he really got everything he wanted, there would be no prisons, a token police force at best, and a mayor that seemingly doesn’t care about a sizeable community that would all but officially be declared fair game for the criminal element.

And that’s without believing groups that aren’t typically behaving in a criminal fashion will decide to change their ways now that the group their bigotry is toward is more powerless than normal. You know that would be a thing, too.

There’s no realistic way Mamdani will get free rein here, thankfully, but he’s hostile enough toward the Jewish community and the police that one would have to be stupid to assume there won’t be increased risks.

Plus, life in the big city has never been what many might term as peaceful. Being armed just makes sense.

My hope is that these new gun owners become new gun voters and start helping to steer the city away from its long anti-gun direction.
