Talk about picking the wrong couple to mess with.
Last week in west Houston, a man decked out like a U.S. Marshal tried to rob a liquor store owner at gunpoint – only to end up shot and crawling back to his getaway car without his shoes.
According to ABC13 Houston, the drama unfolded when Javier Reyes, owner of the store off Gessner and Harwin, stepped outside to take out the trash.
That’s when a red car pulled up, and out jumped a masked man wearing a tactical vest labeled “Marshal,” flashlight in one hand and gun in the other.
“He told me, ‘I’m the police. Get on the floor!’” Reyes recalled. “I said, ‘I didn’t do anything!’”
The suspect forced Reyes to the ground, then revealed his real motive: “It’s a robbery. I’m not the police.”
But little did he know Reyes wasn’t alone. Watching from inside, Reyes’ wife grabbed her own gun and rushed out to confront the fake cop. Chaos erupted.
As the suspect bolted, he lost his shoes and even dropped his gun. Reyes drew his own weapon and fired multiple shots, hitting the suspect at least once before the man crawled into the getaway car.
“The police told me I did a great job,” Reyes said.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 39-year-old Jonathan Prince, now charged with robbery and impersonating a public servant. He turned up at a hospital with gunshot wounds shortly after the failed heist.
Reyes told ABC13 he’s relieved Prince is behind bars, but he and his wife are still shaken and haven’t returned to the store yet.
Police are still investigating whether anyone else in the red getaway car will face charges.
