I’d really rather not talk about another deadly shooting at a school, but if I have to, I’d prefer it not to be in the United States. I’d say I was in “luck” this morning, quotes and all, if it didn’t turn my stomach just thinking about being that flippant, and if you guys have read my stuff for a while, that should be a tad impressive.
Flippant and snarky are my brand, after all.
But these are kids, for crying out loud, and while these might not be American kids, that doesn’t actually matter.
A high school student carrying two pistols shot to death a fellow student before killing himself on Tuesday in an attack in a southern Philippine high school campus that he livestreamed using a body-worn camera, police and other officials said. It was the second fatal school shooting in the country in just two months.
Hundreds of students were evacuated after shots rang out in the high school building of the Ateneo de Zamboanga university campus in the southern port city of Zamboanga. Two other people were injured, police and city officials said.
The suspect, identified by police as grade 9 student [name redacted], fired at a teacher sitting in front of a class but apparently missed. He then shot a student on the fourth floor of the building before going up one floor and killing himself, police said in an initial report.
“He entered and started indiscriminately firing, hitting a Grade 10 student at the fourth floor then subsequently went to the fifth floor and jumped from the said building and committed suicide,” Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla told reporters.
“He showed this on Facebook Live starting when he was climbing up the stairs but there were only snippets,” Remulla said. “We’ll look into his gaming history and his chat history so we cannot come up with a complete answer why this happened until we do a complete forensic analysis.”
So it wasn’t enough that he tried to kill everyone in the room. He had to livestream it. I guess it doesn’t count if you don’t get clicks or something equally freaking stupid.
The body count here isn’t the shocking thing, obviously. It’s still a terrible incident because the victim was only around 15 or so. So much life ahead of him, and some twerp took it from the kid simply because he apparently wanted to make a name for himself. Well, I say we name people like this who want to make a name for themselves. I’m partial to “Dippy the Wonder Spud.”
There’s no reason we should allow them to dictate the conversation. It just encourages them.
Instead, I’m partial to mocking the killers as the pathetic excuses for human excrement they actually are. Make it so they’ll know the fame they seek will never come, and the entire world will mock them for years to come.
Will it do any good? Maybe not, but there are a lot of gun laws in the Philippines, and while some are demanding more in light of this attack, the truth is that the laws are already more than strict enough to stop something like this if they were capable of doing so.
They’re simply not.
