A homeowner shot a burglar last week in Maryland when the burglar was caught breaking into the home.

The Baltimore County Police Department released a statement on their website after the event. The homeowner is not facing charges.

According to the report, police received a call of a home invasion mid-morning on April 25th. They responded to the scene.

Different officers got a call from a nearby area about a man who had been shot.

Burglar Gets Shot

They determined that the man, a burglar, had broken into the home. The homeowner discovered him and shot him.

After being shot, the intruder ran but did not get far. Police found him with at least one gunshot wound.

The burglar was taken to a hospital where he was kept in stable condition. He waits for charges.

According to WMAR, officials have deemed that the homeowner acted in self-defense.

What Are The Odds

Not every burglary ends in a shooting, just the ones that make it big on the news. A report from the United States Supreme Court shows why it is important to be capable of self-defense.

“An estimated 3.7 million burglaries occur each year” in the United States. More than one-quarter of those burglaries happen while someone is home. That is roughly one million per year.

So with those numbers, we know that you aren’t likely to have your home broken into.

But if you happen to be the incredibly unfortunate person who finds themselves at home when a burglar shows up, you had better hope to be prepared.

Because of the people in that circumstance, a fourth of them end up injured somehow by the burglar.

How To Beat The Odds

The homeowner in Baltimore County, Maine happened to be home during the burglary. He beat the odds, but who knows how differently it could have gone if he didn’t step up to defend himself?
