The shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia was an antisemitic act of Islamic terrorism. Muslim extremists don’t like Jews, and not necessarily just because Israel exists. That goes way on back, and nothing is likely to be resolved anytime soon.
But we’ve got our own antisemitic jackwagons in the United States. A few of them have far too high of a profile for my comfort, but free speech means they get to say what they want, and I have to live with that if I want to say what I want.
What they don’t get to do, though, is “shoot” up households trying to celebrate one of the holiest Jewish holidays of the year.
A Jewish family in San Bernardino County is refusing to let what police are investigating as a possible hate crime by a trio of suspects who opened fire on the home dampen the Hanukkah message of bringing light to the world.
The frightening Dec. 12 incident played out around 8 p.m. when homeowner Rodgir Cohen and his son Jon Paul were about to leave their Redlands home in the 1300 block of Magnolia Avenue.
Rodgir and Jon Paul encountered three suspects, two women and a man, in a four-door sedan.
“He was holding whatever it was towards me, but he chose to yell at me,” Jon Paul told KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo. “He said, ‘Free Palestine,’ and then he used the N-word. Looking back and realizing that what he had in his hand was likely a gun and that he was that close to me really shakes me up.”
After the encounter, the father and son got into their vehicle and drove away, but moments later, the family’s home surveillance cameras captured a vehicle returning and firing more than 20 rounds from what was likely, according to investigators with the Redlands Police Department, an Airsoft gun.
Homeowner Heftsibah Cohen said when she heard the noise, she thought there were fireworks going off that made the dogs bark.
“It wasn’t until we pulled the surveillance video that we realized it wasn’t fireworks,” she said.
Now, in absolute fairness, it’s theoretically possible that it was a similar vehicle to the one the three jackwagons were in that, for some reason, decided to take a pile of shots at a single home in that neighborhood.
It’s also theoretically possible that Sydney Sweeney will confess her undying love for me, and my wife will be chill about that, but I’m not holding my breath, either.
This is, of course, gun-controlled California. Was that why they used an airsoft, or was it because they were really a trio of punk teenagers who think it’s cool to act like domestic terrorists?
I honestly don’t know. What I do know is that if someone in the house had been outside when the shooting started, and they lit up the car with a firearm, they’d be in the clear.
Granted, it’s California, so they’d face potential prosecution even if the state is a Stand Your Ground state–and yes, California is.
Punks throughout the country think that if they use an airsoft gun, they aren’t really doing anything wrong, but no one is required to measure the barrel diameter of such a gun before responding with lethal force.
And if these three are caught, they’re still going to go to jail for this crap, as they should.
For all their “free Palestine” crap, they should have focused on keeping themselves nice and free.
