A DeLand, Florida homeowner was forced to defend his family Monday morning after an armed man pushed his way into their home, an intruder police say had been stalking the woman who lives there.
According to local police, the woman heard a knock at the back door and assumed it was a delivery.
When she opened it, the armed suspect forced his way inside. Her husband immediately grabbed his firearm, ordered the man to stop, and opened fire when the intruder ignored him.
The suspect ran into the nearby woods before officers and a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office helicopter located him.
Nearby business owner Margaret Bucher told News 6 the incident shook the normally quiet neighborhood.
“Good for him,” she said of the homeowner. “If it happened to me, I’d want my husband to shoot him… that would be scary for me.”
Police say the armed intruder knew the woman in the home, and she had already reported being stalked.
The family believed it was only a matter of time before the man attempted a confrontation, a fear that became reality Monday morning.
Body camera video released by deputies shows the wounded suspect being taken into custody.
He is expected to survive and is now facing a stack of felony charges, including burglary of an occupied dwelling while armed, aggravated assault with a firearm, and destruction of evidence.
DeLand Police are continuing the investigation and have not yet released the suspect’s name.
