Not every state has legalized marijuana, at least not for recreational use. That means there’s still a thriving black market for the drug and likely will be for quite some time, I’d imagine.

Where there’s a black market, though, there’s criminality, and where there’s criminality that involves a lot of money or a valuable product, there will be guns, no matter what laws are on the books.

Possession of a firearm by anyone using marijuana is illegal. As Cam noted earlier today, the Trump administration is trying to uphold that ban. However, the problem with that is that anyone involved in marijuana who wants to break the law, even if the marijuana part is legal, will keep breaking the law.

The bans sure didn’t seem to stop this bunch in Louisiana, after all.

Five people have been arrested, and more than 30 guns have been seized following an investigation into an illegal marijuana distribution network, deputies say.

As part of the investigation, agents obtained a search warrant at the Copper Creek apartments in Livingston and were able to seize about 27.5 grams of marijuana, four THC vape carts, and residual methamphetamine, according to deputies. They added that agents were able to determine that Trevor Sibley was the main supplier from a location off of North Corbin Road in Walker.

According to LPSO, through investigations and search warrants, agents were also able to seize more than 30 firearms, packaging material, digital weighing scales, and more. Investigators said two of the firearms were fully automated.

Authorities say more arrests are likely.

However, despite the prohibition on people involved in the drug trade owning guns, there were a lot of them. Then again, if there were two “fully automated” guns, which I take to mean fully automatic, then it’s clear they weren’t really interested in playing by the rules in the first place. Our first clue is that they were distributing marijuana illegally.

Yes, I have a problem with the blanket prohibition on gun ownership for people who use marijuana occasionally.

However, let’s be real here. There is a criminal element that is knee-deep in the illicit pot trade, and they’re going to get guns unlawfully. They’ve always gotten them unlawfully and will continue to get them unlawfully. They’re criminals. Not obeying the law is part of the job description.

My issue here is that when they break the existing laws, some dipstick out there decides that we need more laws. They can’t seem to get that those are never going to work because these people don’t exist in the same world you and I do. They live in a world where the only reason to obey the law is to avoid attention, where they can access just about anything they want, regardless of what rules are in place.

You’re not going to stop them.

You only stop regular folks who aren’t a threat to anyone who isn’t trying to harm them and theirs.

Then again, it’s not like any of the anti-gunners I’ve run into seem to care all that much about anyone who might actually need to defend themselves or someone else.
