Gun sales go up year after year. The Bruen decision meant that subjective permitting requirements were unconstitutional, scuttling generations of oppressive anti-Second Amendment laws. Through it all, though, we were told how every bit of our rights being restored would result in our society becoming less safe.

Never mind that all of this happened after the spikes in homicides in 2020 and 2021, which suggested the status quo wasn’t exactly helping.

But then we saw the numbers come crashing down. According to the FBI, though, 2025 hit historic levels not seen since I Love Lucy was on the air.

Data reported to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program shows 2024 to 2025 marked the largest year-to-year decline in violent crime rates since FBI estimations began in 1936.

Following the May announcement that violent crime decreased 9.3% from 2024 to 2025, the FBI released detailed data tables on more than 13 million criminal offenses reported to the FBI by participating law enforcement agencies for 2025. The data support the previously released violent crime trends:

  • Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter offenses decreased an estimated 18.1%.
  • Rape offenses decreased an estimated 7.6%.
  • Aggravated assault figures decreased an estimated 7.2%.
  • Robbery offenses decreased an estimated 18.5%.

The 2025 murder rate of 4.1 per 100,000 inhabitants is tied with 1955 and 1956 for the lowest murder rate.

Property crime and hate crime also declined in 2025. Law enforcement agencies submitted hate crime reports involving 10,881 criminal incidents and 13,026 related offenses as being motivated by bias toward race/ethnicity/ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and gender identity.
To publish a national trend, the FBI’s UCR Program used a dataset of reported hate crime incidents and zero reports submitted by agencies reporting 6 or more common months of hate crime data to the FBI’s UCR Program for both 2024 and 2025. According to this dataset, reported hate crime incidents decreased 7.0% from 11,404 in 2024, to 10,606 in 2025.

Alan Gottlieb of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms had thoughts about this.

“Yet here we are, following years of steady firearms sales, resulting in expanded gun ownership, and violent crime has plummeted,” he noted in a statement. “This isn’t us talking, it’s the FBI, which said in its own news release that these figures ‘marked the largest year-to-year decline in violent crime rates since FBI estimations began in 1936.’ Not surprisingly, the media has failed to report this part of the story.

“Annual gun sales have been in the millions,” he observed, “according to firearms industry data. The most recent estimate on licensed concealed carry across the United States tops 20 million. Twenty-nine states have adopted ‘Constitutional carry’ laws allowing citizens to carry firearms without licenses or permits. Supreme Court rulings have been restoring the Second Amendment as the cornerstone of our Bill of Rights.

“And now,” Gottlieb continued, “gun prohibitionists remain silent, stubbornly refusing to acknowledge their hysteria-driven rhetoric has been wrong, because their crusade has never been about public safety. Their goal is public disarmament.”

Yes, it is. We all know it.

Which is why they’re still pushing the idea that so-called gun violence is growing rather than falling faster than Bill Cosby’s popular appeal.

There are more guns than ever in private hands. Nearly a third of all Americans carry a firearm at least some of the time. All while gun control laws are falling left and right. While I can’t prove they’re connected, the fact that this is the exact opposite of what anti-gunners keep claiming was inevitable discredits pretty much everything they’ve ever said on the topic.

It also shatters the so-called research that has been used to justify this mythology.

More guns don’t equal more crime. John Lott has shown that a million times at this point.

Now, the FBI is essentially making the same point, even if they won’t come right out and tell us that.
