A Southern California father is being hailed as a hero after authorities say he stopped an armed intruder who broke into his family’s home, opened fire, and threatened the lives of his wife and teenage daughter.

According to reporting by KTLA 5, the terrifying incident unfolded around 10:23 p.m. Friday night in the city of San Jacinto, roughly 90 miles east of Los Angeles.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Ismael Martinez, had no connection to the family and appears to have randomly targeted the home after allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a knife less than a mile away. The girlfriend was hospitalized and is expected to survive.

Wife Discovers Armed Stranger Inside Home

The family’s nightmare reportedly began when the homeowner’s wife entered the house to charge her phone while her husband was outside with neighbors.

Instead of finding a quiet home, she reportedly encountered an armed stranger who had allegedly found firearms inside the residence. Neighbors told KTLA that Martinez began shooting as the woman fled toward the garage.

“There’s an intruder,” she reportedly yelled after escaping the house. At that point, the homeowner realized his teenage daughter was still inside.

Father Rushes In To Save Daughter

According to witness accounts, the father immediately moved toward the house in an effort to rescue his daughter. Neighbors said the intruder began reloading and opened fire on the homeowner as he entered.

One witness told KTLA the father was hit or knocked down during the exchange but continued fighting.

“He got shot at,” a neighbor said. “He dropped, got up, and he unloaded on him and got the guy down.”

The gunfight ended with Martinez dead inside the home. Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department arrived moments later and found the suspect deceased.

Neighbors Call Homeowner a Hero

The incident has shaken the normally quiet neighborhood. Several neighbors expressed sympathy for the family while praising the homeowner’s actions.

“He did more than just save his own family,” one neighbor told KTLA. “If he didn’t take that guy down, where was his next step? One of our houses?”

Another neighbor described the family as “good people” who were forced into an unimaginable situation. The homeowner and his family have not publicly commented.

DA Reviewing Case

As is common in fatal self-defense shootings, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case. No charges have been filed against the homeowner.

Based on the facts released so far, many residents believe the father acted to protect both his family and the surrounding neighborhood from an armed and dangerous intruder.

Meanwhile, community members are reportedly organizing support for the family, including a GoFundMe campaign to help cover property damage and mental health resources following the traumatic ordeal.

For gun owners, the incident serves as another reminder that violent encounters often happen without warning—and that when seconds count, families may have only themselves to rely on.

Self-defense doesn’t end when the threat goes down. That’s when the real battle begins. Lawyers. Prosecutors. Headlines. USCCA Members never fight that battle alone. Find out how.
