I don’t know how often it happens, but I can see why someone might leave a career in law enforcement to become a teacher. After all, if you see a bunch of dead kids, it might seem like a better use of your time to try to work with them and prevent them from being murdered. In our inner cities, I can see that being a thing.

But what if you work in an area of law enforcement that some people really hate? It wasn’t that long ago we heard everyone screaming about defunding the police and all that.

Currently, ICE is the boogieman, and on one hand, we’ve got people trying to taunt ICE by saying they could pick another line of work, all while tensions are as high as I’ve ever seen them. We’ve also got California, which is trying to treat ICE agents like they’re pedos or something.

I’m actually not joking.

A new bill introduced in the California State Assembly would bar individuals who worked for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the Trump administration from becoming teachers or law enforcement officers in the state, KTVU reported.

Assembly Bill 1627 would disqualify current ICE employees from future employment in two major sectors: education and law enforcement. Specifically, it would prohibit them from serving in any California state or local police agency or working as teachers, administrators or staff in public schools, including the University of California and California State University systems.

The bill’s authors say the bill is a direct response to what they describe as abuses of power and civil rights violations by federal immigration officers during the Trump-era crackdown and ongoing operations.

AB 1627 is currently a proposal and would need to pass both houses of the Legislature and be signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to become law. It could be heard in committee as early as Feb. 26.

The bill was introduced last week, and its only listed sponsor is Assemblymember Anamarie Farias, so I wouldn’t get too worked up about the impact of this measure, but holy crap, how does anyone think this will ramp down tensions?

Keep in mind that legally barring a group of people from being a teacher is something they do with folks who diddle kids and similar crimes. This bill seeks to treat certain law enforcement officers in the exact same way. Why? Because they don’t like ICE.

I get that there are some concerns over how ICE is conducting its operations, but that’s for the courts to handle, not for state legislatures to treat every member of the agency as criminals should they seek a career change.

Not only that, but even if an ICE agent agrees that things aren’t being done correctly and wants to move on, a bill like this signals that there’s nowhere to go, so he might as well dig in. It’ll breed resentment among the agents themselves, making them more likely to view protestors with hostility.

And it’s definitely not making me look kindly on Democrats when they complain about ICE, that’s for damn sure.

Look, I have no issues holding law enforcement accountable for their actions. If they overstep, they should be punished for that. This comes from growing up with a law enforcement father who absolutely loathed seeing officers cross the line, then walk around like their poop didn’t stink.

However, growing up that way, I also know that the media likes to Monday morning quarterback literally everything. They also hate the Trump administration and have lied about enough stuff over the last year that I don’t believe them on anything, so I’m not inclined to take media reports at face value.

So trying to bar current ICE agents from teaching careers in California disgusts me.

Granted, I think ICE agents could do better than seeking work as a teacher in that hellhole of a state, but still…

If this goes anywhere, and it hopefully won’t, this isn’t going to make anything better. Quite the contrary.

Then again, maybe that’s the goal.
