AMG doesn’t do concept cars often. When it does build one, like this Concept AMG GT XX, the results are astounding.

The GT XX is a four-door coupe with no rear glass that promises to deliver well over 1,300 horsepower thanks to some of the most advanced electric motor technology in the world. Oh yeah, it’s an EV, too.

Concept AMG GT XX

The Concept AMG GT XX is a concept car, but it also offers a close look at what the next AMG GT 4-Door will look like. That’s AMG’s own go-fast model, which doesn’t share its basic design with anything that wears a normal Mercedes-Benz badge like most AMG models do.

Its motors are exceptional: Three axial flux motors from Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Yasa. Axial flux motors run the magnetic field parallel to the direction of the motor’s rotation, instead of radially.

Basically, if a regular electric motor is a tube, axial flux is a spinning Frisbee. What matters is that it delivers more power in a thinner, smaller package. The GT XX’s rear motors are just 3.1 inches wide.

‘More Than’ 1,341 HP

All you really care about is the output, and the Concept AMG GT XX’s three motors deliver more than 1,341 horsepower. That delivers a top speed of more than 223 miles per hour.

The car’s battery uses tech AMG learned from its Formula 1 racing efforts. It has a completely new cell design with narrow and tall cells that AMG says means better cooling.

The cells also have a wider operating window with a cell chemistry designed specifically for the car. They have high energy density, fast charging, and can charge more quickly at higher temperatures. AMG says it can add about 250 miles in just 4 minutes when plugged in.

Inside, the Concept AMG GT XX is tired. The futuristic layout and 3D-printed carbon fiber racing seats are upholstered in a new Labfiber Biotech Leather Alternative that is made from recycled tires. The concept car uses tires from actual AMG customer racing cars, with the process getting about 43 square feet of fabric from a single tire.

But the Best Part Is the Look

Then there is the design. Sure, the shape has a drag coefficient of just 0.198, and of course, it has active aerodynamics and a tapering rear that help it make downforce without drag, but none of that matters when you look at it.

Because this design, with its nose leaping forward, six tail lights, and no rear glass, is stunning. It looks like it is moving when it is sitting still. Each part is shaped for aesthetics and function in almost equal measure.

Even the paint is special, with the Fluid Light Paint letting AMG apply electricity to the paint in sections to make it luminescent in the dark. The entire car can be used to show off or let you know it’s charged.

AMG doesn’t plan to build this car, or at least not exactly like this. But most of the shape, as well as the impressive new electric motors? Those will all be on the next AMG GT EV, a car we’re expecting to see by the end of the year.
